: MY FLOWMASTERS ARE TOO LOUD!!
Robert G Mar 11th, 04, 10:28 PM I picked up a set of 3" 40 FLOWMASTERS at a steal
so i had to get them, well here is my set up
i have hookers with 3.5 collecters ,4 feet of straight pipe 3" dia. then the mufflers and turn downs right befor the rear axles . its loud it sound cool when i rev up the motor but i would like to bring the sound down a little ,just so i can hear under the hood better , im willing to rework my set up ,so bring on the help.
this is a custom job that i did on it so i can't hook up tail pipes to the back i riged it up :D
RacnJsn95 Mar 11th, 04, 11:06 PM I think 40's are too loud myself... I like the 50s. If you can somehow add tailpipes it will quite it down some.
sinned Mar 11th, 04, 11:08 PM Sell me the 40's dirt cheap and buy some 50's
Bob West Mar 11th, 04, 11:33 PM H-pipe or X-pipe will help some graemlins/thumbsup.gif
1967talldeck427 Mar 11th, 04, 11:37 PM If it's too loud, then your too old smile.gif just kidding  My 40 series dump off just before the axle and I dont think its loud enough, but mine has 2 1/2" pipes with no crossover.
Silver69Camaro Mar 11th, 04, 11:38 PM Just about any muffler is loud without tailpipes!
JRS70LS5 Mar 11th, 04, 11:47 PM If you are ever going to have a conversation with someone while you drive you'll need tail pipes to do it! :D H pipe wouldn't hurt either.
Bad Rat 414 Mar 11th, 04, 11:55 PM I run headers and open Cherry Bombs that stop under the front seat. I like it loud.
Bomber '67 Mar 12th, 04, 12:00 AM There is a reason why the factory ran tailpipes all the way back - otherwise it will be louder inside the car than it is outside!
Personally, I enjoy setting off car alarms as I cruise through parking lots smile.gif
Thomas
Silver69Camaro Mar 12th, 04, 12:28 AM Well, that and they didn't want the exhaust creeping its way back into the car. tongue.gif
kev69350 Mar 12th, 04, 1:49 AM well, personally, I have 3" 50's with turndowns right before the axle, I love the sound, Loud!!
I would suggest to put either h or x pipes in, along with tail pipes if you can. Also, switching from 40's to 50's isn't going to be really noticable, 50's are just a deeper sound
you might try 70's they have a softer sond go to flowmasters website they have sounds you can hear the differences!!!!!!
71chevy0192 Mar 12th, 04, 3:13 PM Robert G - If you have the money, i'd say run an X pipe and tailpipes.
Bomber '67 - Likewise. lol Or cruising down a main street of a small town with buildings lining both sides of the street....alleys....etc.....fun fun.
A buddy of mine has a BB '51 chevy truck. He's running headers > 3ft or so of 2.5" > flowmasters(not sure what series) > turndowns directly after, and the truck is surprisingly quiet. I don't understand it myself. graemlins/clonk.gif
ZZ69chevelle Mar 12th, 04, 3:30 PM Loud is really neat, but I wish I would have been a little more careful between glasspacks and rock & roll growing up. I can't tell you how annoying it is to have a constant ringing in your ears that never goes away, and never will. I have 30 series on my Chevelle, with the H pipe and rear exiting pipes, and it's nice and mellow until you get on it.
Dragn70 Mar 12th, 04, 3:47 PM Dynomax Super Turbo
Midnight Marauder Mar 12th, 04, 4:42 PM I am really diggin' Magnaflow lately. Just had one installed on my 04 Yukon. Sweet, deep and mellow tone but really opens up when you romp on it.
Robert G Mar 12th, 04, 5:18 PM I like loud mean sounding motors,HELL my corvette had hooker side pipes with know muffler cores in them last summer
but the thing is that i would like it to be alittle less loud seeing that i have a motor that isn't were i would like it to be yet and i would hate to lose parts because of a loud exhaust system, anyway i need to bring the idle exhaust level down a tad more mellow, but i don't care how loud it is at wot ,its the sitting at the light next to a cop with a hard on for gear heads that worries me
kboorman Mar 12th, 04, 11:34 PM G - When it comes to Chevys - bigger, faster & louder is better - it's the American way! Put the exhaust over the rear axle with some turndowns or out the rear & let someone else deal with the dB's. But...
ZZ and others - I grew up like y'all did - LOUD. Tough getting to sleep with the ringing from 120+ dB from 1st row seats at a 'Maiden concert, huh?
Robert G Mar 13th, 04, 1:16 AM I KNEW THAT FLOWS WHERE LOAD WHEN I GOT THEM, and I can rock n roll WITH THE BEST ( ask the X WIFE)
BUT when you feel like cuzin with me and its 2:00 am and WE just left the "SPOT" YOU'LL THANK GOD THAT I DIDN'T GO " THE LOUDER IS BETTER WAY " AMERICAN DREAM, HAY COURT SUCKS AND POSTING BOND IS A WAST OF MONEY ,but if you want to hang with me in IL. and you have deep pockets F**k it
I'll take the pipes off ,throw in some TED and on
the head unit and ROCK N ROLL graemlins/beers.gif TILL THEN I WOULD LIKE TO BEING IT DOWN FROM 10 TO ABOUT 7
ON THE VOLUME KNOB ;) HEAVY CHEVY FOR LIFE!!!! :D
Robert G Mar 13th, 04, 1:19 AM ITS NOT BEING OLD ITS BEING SMART
Bob Tiley Mar 14th, 04, 1:59 AM Get some 2 1/2" flowmaster tailpipes move the mufflers back to bolt onto the tailpipes wit ha 2/12" to 3" adapter and have a local muffler shop bend a piece of 3" pipe to connect the headers to the mufflers. That's the setup I have and I like it, It's not too loud in the car and still flows plenty for a street big block.

Robert G Mar 14th, 04, 11:12 AM I will try that , i have a set of 2.5 pipes
smile.gif
blaauboer Mar 14th, 04, 11:40 AM I have 3 inch ,H-pipe,2 chamber flows with turn downs that stop just before the rearend.....
Sound great .......Knock on wood I have never been stoped with my Chevelle.....It's realy not all that bad just cruising.....The bullets are another story
Robert G Mar 14th, 04, 11:44 AM THANKS , I see that Summit has them . would you have any sound clips of your car??? smile.gif
4FTTY4 Mar 14th, 04, 2:53 PM I'm tempted to put some dynomax bullets on my car, but I don't think I would be able to go more than a block without getting stopped...does anyone else run them on the street?
blaauboer Mar 14th, 04, 4:57 PM The bullets are so bad that I have been asked to leave the track with them on....They thought I had just open headers on....until I said look under and look...On the street they are way to crazy....cant hear a thing.....I dont like not being able to hear the motor.......Just my 2 cents......
jocww Mar 14th, 04, 10:24 PM i like my delta 40s theyre a lil quiter than regular 40s. no dumps but i do have side exits right behind the door in the elco
kboorman Mar 16th, 04, 11:23 PM Robert - It's been a few days since I got to look at this post, and I just got a look at your response to my reply. Do I detect a bit of sarcasm? tongue.gif Sometimes my enthusiasm gets the best of me. Anyway, I know where you're coming from, and my suggestion to use the length of pipe to get over the rear axle and then use turndowns was meant to help out. I think that the x-pipe idea is a good one too. My car is not set up that way, but I have a few buddies that have this setup, and it doesn't sound too bad. Unfortunately, IL is a little far away from PA, otherwise I would take you up on a night at the "spot" and as much Ted as you can handle. graemlins/beers.gif (I'd bring enough for bail just in case) BTW, I like Ted's older stuff with the Dukes graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Take it easy, Kirk.
Robert G Mar 17th, 04, 11:02 PM YA ,I WAS HAVING FUN WITH THIS POST :D I will work on keeping the heavy chevy loud ,but not crazy, I will not be driving the car ever day only to hunt down the BLING BLING RICE CARS OR THE YO MO FO 24" wheel, strait pipe flip flop paint , crack dealer cars that fly up and down the street
AURORA has plenty of them, but its the guy in the chevelle that gets the cops worried, because we can back up our power but the the othere wanabes
get hurt trying to keep up with the big boys
hay maybe this year i will save up some money to get the chevelle painted, this way they can tell there friend that they got beat by a chevelle
that wasn't in primer for a change
anyway h pipe on the way graemlins/beers.gif
Bobalos Mar 18th, 04, 10:17 AM I ran a setup very much like that in my Camaro & putting in a H Pipe helped to tame it down a bit, but it really only gave it a little more deep tone, not too much on the volume. if you dont mind sacrificing the weight, adding a set of bullets ahead of the Muffins is really about the only option you have (w/o changing to another muffin). its the 3 1/2" collectors that are doing you in. one other thing you might try is to get rid of the turn downs & point the noise out the back.
Bob
