: How to test HEI Coil and or Magnetic Pickup?

My chevelle decided it was gonna quit on me tonight as I was pulling into a small local car show. It wouldnt start back up at first. After a few tries it did. Then it would quit a minute later. It wouldnt start up again for a little while. Then it would start again, then quit. I do have a MSD 6A hooked up. I tested for power and did the magnetic trigger jumper wire test and it tested good. The only other thing I can think of is the ignition coil or pickup. But can those have intermittent problems? Everything is brand with about 1500 miles. Does anyone know how to test these two individual pieces?

if you have a multimeter you can hook the two test leads to the pick up wires, switch the multi-meter to AC voltage and crank the engine over. there should be .5 to 1.0 of AC voltage.
or you can do a ohm check, the pick up should be between 500 to 1500 ohms. also when you check resistance wiggle the wires from the pickup these over years will break internally because of the vacuum advance moving it.
Coil- do a resistance check on the + and - terminals this should be between 5 to 10 ohms on a stock coil lower on aftermarkets. then do a resistance check from the coil output (tower) to ether the + or - terminals this should be between 5000 to 10,000 ohms
the resistance values are ballpark and also try to check coil resistance when it is hot.
hope this helps

i forgot make sure your coil is getting a full 12 volts (by pass resistance wire)
