View Full Version : replacing interior with PUI interiors
jim9254 Apr 7th, 08, 9:06 PM has any of you guys use PUI interiors I was looking at classic muscle catalog and Original Parts Group classic muscle sells PUI and I don,t know what OPG sells it looks good I don,t know who to go with can any body help thanks
rcrchsr16 Apr 7th, 08, 11:36 PM I bought a complete PUI interior kit from Ground Up. It had just about everything- carpet, sound deadener, headliner w/sail panels, F & R door panels, F & R seat covers, front arm rests,etc,- for $849.
You'd should think about going with Ground Up or someone that will be going to the Englishtown Flea market next week, or Carlisle PA the next week starting the 23rd of April. You'll save on shipping and be able to walk aisle after aisle of vendors selling soup to nuts. Not a whole lot of Chevelle parts left out there, but enough to justify the trip!

jtm60 Apr 8th, 08, 4:01 AM if you are decided on using PUI, I was told that they offer a 'gold' series that is a step above their typical line..'gold' is supposed to be of better quality. nobody at GU bothered to inform me of this at the time, and I have some less than perfect seams as a result. I have also had some peeling mylar on my PUI door panels. maybe you'd like to ask GU about this stuff if you go to E-town, in some cases I think PUI has backed up their stuff. Personally, I'd walk a few more feet and get them from Ausley's-they will be there too.
If i had to do it over again, I would go with Legendary..Do a search on here, there are some photos of PUI vs. Legendary, and the difference in quality was evident from the photos. For the amount of $$ I have tied up in my seats, I would have gladly paid more for covers that don't have imperfections in the seams.
Alwhite00 Apr 8th, 08, 5:39 AM I used PUI door panels & seat covers and everything fit fine.

I would not use PUI anything again. I'd strongly recommend Legendary.

It depends on what you happen to be working on...
Legendary doesn't offer products for all years and body styles. Sometimes PUI is your only choice.
czeto Apr 8th, 08, 8:12 AM PUI had two quality levels, regular and Gold. I've seen them both and if I was to go with PUI, I would definitely get the Gold. By the way, I plan on getting Legendary. I "believe" they have a slight advantage as to quality control.
Jimmy P Apr 8th, 08, 8:53 AM I've bought PUI stuff for years and have done about 12 cars with their products without any problems or issues. On the 69 I'm working on now, I decided to try Legendary based on the feedback on this site. Man! I'm so glad I did! The quality is far superior from the material used on the back sides, to the heavier vinyl they make in-house, to the plusher overall feel.
My neighbor just did his Chevelle in PUI and when you compare them next to each other, it's a night and day difference. PUI has a 'flatter' look to it, and a harder feel, while Legendary's is supple and padded more like the originals. I'm taking my originals out now that are in pretty good condition except for the faded color on the parchment seat covers, so I have the originals for my comparison as well.
PUI is OK, but Legendary is superior AND has a warranty.

jim9254 Apr 8th, 08, 10:04 PM Thanks guys for all the great info legendary is very good but for every thing I need it will cost 1272 .00 with out the door panels and other things dose anybody use Original Parts Group Upholstery or know some one who did any picture of legendary or other brands thanks
Jimmy P Apr 8th, 08, 11:11 PM Well, if you won't take my word for it, do a search and you will find some pictures on here. If you did a search in the first place, you wouldn't be wasting your time and mine, but I'm glad to help you and point you in the right direction;)
mn65bis Apr 9th, 08, 12:41 AM I just watched a professional apholsterer install a PUI cover on a 69 Nova front bench. He did not like the way they sewed the front seams together. They had so much material underneath that they pushed up the cover. So the guy ended up having 2 raised seams sticking up a half an inch higher than the rest of the cover. The front seat cover should have layed down flat.
Go with Legendary. I had troubles with PUI also with headliner and covers. The bad thing is that you don't really know there is a problem until you have invested a fair amount of time and effort into an inferior product.
Good luck
webfoot Apr 9th, 08, 1:10 AM I've posted this a few times before but now seems like an appropriate time:

jtm60 Apr 9th, 08, 3:46 AM that is the picture i was thinking of...i can see the same kind of seam issue, but i think mine is a little worse than that. stevie wonder could see which ones are the better looking product.
it makes me want to take my covers off and have them re-done with legendary! oh well, live and learn.
jim9254 Apr 9th, 08, 9:58 PM I fond out today that legendary do not make 1966 Chevelle upholstery I called legendary and the said not I asked when ? they do not know now what in the picture you have them side by side the bottom is legendary upholstery the PUI is the flat one I can see the difference thank you for the info
savage71chevelless Apr 10th, 08, 6:43 PM I wanted to buy Legendary too after all the rave reviews, but come to find out they don't make a 67 bench, so I just ordered my interior through OPGI, which I confirmed with them, mine are made by Distinctive Industries, which my covers are guaranteed to be made in the USA
jim9254 Apr 10th, 08, 10:09 PM I order my to day thought OPG and got them coming but there moving to a new ware house so a lot of stuff is back ordered I will have to go other to get like foam the trim for bucket seat carpet and stuff like that well thanks guys for all the feed back I see how I make out thanks again
Janeway20 Apr 15th, 08, 9:33 AM Hey, just thought I would tell you that Ausley's has the interior kits for your car for $739.00. They will be at Carlisle also if you want to check it out!
Mod69 Apr 15th, 08, 9:58 AM I am ordering a door panels f and r, dash pad, carpet, sound deadner from NPD this morning. Anyone have any input about these. I do need a rear seat cover but not bucket seat covers. I might check out ausleys
Musclerodz Apr 15th, 08, 11:10 PM We have PUI, Legendary, and TWE for all your interior needs. We are finishing a bright blue 70 that was done with PUI that is turning out very nice. Pics coming in a week or two once the interior in installed. Legendary covers are nicer IMO but the customer did not want to go to the extra cost since we supplied 100% of the interior new including the dash. We will be using TWE door panels on our Camaro for comarison of fit and quality.
JSHinNC Apr 28th, 08, 8:43 PM I recently completed restoring my interior (1970 Chevelle) I purchased from Ground Up...front and rear panels, ACC carpet kit, arm rest pads. Quality was good on all and everything fit. The only issue I had was, no cutouts for the door panel clips on the pass side door panel. Drivers' side Ok. No complaints other than that. Seats were redone at a local custom street rod shop.
450HPChevelle Apr 28th, 08, 10:12 PM I just had Legendary covers put on my seats.
I'm going down to Ind. tomarrow to pick them up. :hurray:
I'll post pics of the seats when I get a chance. ;)
mattkinel Apr 29th, 08, 10:39 PM I had an awful time with the PUI front bench cover. The rear cover went on AMAZING! I had to convert to buckets and the PUI covers were good, but the seat foam was awful. If you use foam that isn't pre-trimmed then don't even bother recovering the seats, you'll have lumpy seats.
The trimmed seat foam I got from Year One. It was expensive, but worth it. For the buckets, the foam was from Ground Up, and needs major trimming to work. The foam is such a pain in the ass to trim and make look good, I think its worth the money to have it come out of the box perfect.
