Is it possible for an input bearing to be too thick? A friend of mine asked me to look at a Muncie hes putting together and he got to the point of installing the front bearing and it won't go on all the way. There is a gap about the thickness of the outside snap ring between the bearing and front of the case. Enough to prevent the bearing retainer from bolting up. The input shaft appears to be in all the way (rear mainshaft and tail bolted on). You can look inside and see the bearing is tight up to the input gear. The case doesn't have any welded ears and doesn't appear to have been milled. The number on the bearing box is 6307ZZENR (Nachi)
The bearing is on there tight and I can understand his not wanting to disassemble the unit to get the bearing off. Would it be OK to leave it like this and put a shim behind the bearing retainer?

There are several bearing that fit in the hole, one that is designed for a spacer on the front of the case. If that is the bearing you have then just get the spacer.

Any other setup will cause a failure.

Where did the bearing come from and have you called to have them check.

The original bearings were Timken, next they used BCA who was bought by Federal Mongrul. N1307L was the number of the original, a weird ass narrow bearing for the front of a muncie and not much else.

The new super case uses a wider bearing and Auto Grear makes a spacer to be used with a wider bearing.

Thanx Wally,
You think if we heat the center of the bearing, we can pop it off without disassembling the trans? Or is that a bad idea? That's the only thing I could come up with. Tried two big screw drivers on each side in the snap ring groove and prying, but no dice.

No heat at all!!!

Is that bearing seated all the way against the face of the input????

Some of the bearings fit real tight. I have a bearing press that Auto Gear makes that bolts on the input and pushed the bearing on.

Yes, The bearing is tight up against the input gear and there is no shim or oil slinger behind it.
As for heating the bearing to get it off, He's not concerned about ruining the bearing as it's the wrong one. Just wants to get it off to put on the correct one, and doesn't want to take the trans back apart to get behind the bearing to pull it off.

Right, heat it and remove it. You need the slinger when you get the correct bearing. If it not to much trouble, measure the thickness of the bearing and post it.

Had him bring over his Muncie this weekend and we got it all straightened out. The front bearing was too thick. Pulled out a correct bearing from one of my kits and now he's good to go.
As for the other bearing, I measured the thickness and came up with .825"
