Hi...I am hoping someone here can help me. I have a 71' Chevelle and last night when I pulled into my driveway and went to turn off my wipers (it had been raining pretty hard) they stopped working halfway up. So this morning we checked the fuse...not the fuse....checked the wiring under the hood where the connections were...they seemed ok, fiddled with the switch inside and last but not least looked at where the left wiper goes into the black box and can't maually budge it to turn so that I can at least get the wipers down so that they aren't right in my vision looking out the windshield.
Any ideas as to what it could be? The motor, the ground wire, switch itself maybe? Any help would be appreciated. My husband boughtme the car this past summer and while I know cars this age have things go wrong with them I don't really have much fix-it knowledge. I am hoping it is something simple to fix and not too expensive. Thanks!

Not sure exactly what your problem is but here's what I would do:
First unplug and replug all of the connections at the wiper motor a few times. This likely would fix any corrosion problems with the electrical connectors. If that fails I would :
Go to your local "Auto Zone", Kragans's....etc and buy a new wiper/washer assembly for your car. They all still sell them and they are pretty cheap. Install same and your problem should be solved.
The parking mechanism is inside the wiper/washer unit and if it is really faulty there is very little likelyhood that you can fix it.

I recall reading an old post on this site that when you turn the wiper switch to the off position, the wiper motor circuit grounds to the wiper motor case to park the wipers. So check the wiper motor case ground wire.

My new motor did this on my 67. It was the ground wire. As soon as I grounded it, the wipers parked

Not sure about a 68, but on my 66, the motor case grounds to the firewall through the lower mounting screw that is self threaded into the firewall. There is a brass strap (about 1 inch long) that is riveted to the wiper motor case on one end and that the lower mounting screw passes through and presses against on the other end to complete the ground path.

Well...it isn't the wiper motor. Took off the motor and the grounding strap was broke so we put the new motor on thinking that may solve the problem but the new motor is doing the same thing. Plenty of juice going in to the motor but from the motor to the wiper switch nothing. So what was mentioned is that maybe the wiper switch is the culprit. Haven't had time yet to check it out but am hoping to get behind the wiper switchplate to see if there is a bad wire or maybe even the wires come loose.
