: 5 point harness possible with stock seats?
kboorman Feb 13th, 04, 11:55 PM I am in the process of building my first car that will run in the 10's. It's a big block '66 and I am psyched! I understand that if you're running less than 11 sec that you need a 5 pt harness. Can I do this safely with the stock buckets, or will I have to go to an aftermartket seat? Thanks for the advice, Kirk.
kboorman Feb 14th, 04, 12:28 AM BTW, if this post is in the wrong section, please move it. Sometimes I have a hard time trying to figure out what belongs in the "performance" section.
10sec69 Feb 14th, 04, 10:54 AM Kirk, Do you have a roll cage? (I assume so.) I have a stock interior and mounted the lap belts in the original bolt holes and the crotch belt in a new, reinforced hole under the seat. I use Y-type shoulder harness that wraps around the cross bar behind the seat. Works great.
There's a small pic of my harness on my web page (see sig).
Eric68 Feb 14th, 04, 12:49 PM Not sure what the Chevelle seats look like, but I just put the 5 points in my 68 Camaro with the original bucket seats in place.
I did exactly as 10sec69 described for the "crotch belt" -- put a hole in the floor under the seat and added a reinforcement plate under the car so the bolt cannot pull through the thin sheetmetal. The belt just slides between the seat back and bottom.
Then my lap belt part just goes to the stock location on the floor and the shoulder belts bolt to the roll bar.

In order to meet NHRA rules you're supposed to have a head rest which the bucket seats in my car don't provide for. So far I've never failed tech by not having them, and I regularly race at 4 different NHRA/IHRA sanctioned tracks.
hoffbug Feb 14th, 04, 1:32 PM I even managed it with a bench seat...

Rumblin70SS Feb 14th, 04, 3:07 PM Ken,
Are your harnesses the Y or H type and how do you have them mounted to the rollbar??

My shoulder belts are two individual straps. They are connected to the cross bar using the cinch clips that came with the harness kit (RCI). Easy to install and very safe.
Got_CID? Feb 14th, 04, 6:18 PM I have those same RCI belts waiting to go in, except mine are the Y type. How do you like yours? Are they relativly comfortable for day to day use? I'll be using mine with stock buckets too.
kboorman Feb 14th, 04, 11:18 PM Wow! Thanks for the responses and photos. 10sec - yes, the car will have a cage so I can mount the shoulder belts. I was thinking of a custom setup here that would have a removable crossbar to allow accesss to the rear seat when not at the track (actually I think that Chris Alston's Chassisworks is making such a kit). Kjett and hoffbug, thanks for the pics. Gotta go fast, but gotta be safe!

Thanks for the info I appreciate it. I see how you have it done when I look at the picture a little closer.
Nice 66 too. I love how the car is clean and simple with the stock interior and seats.
