i need to select a cam for an engine i am in the process of building. the engine is a smallblock 400 bored .030 over, double hump 67 cc heads, performer rpm intake, trw flat top pistons. i have a turbo 350 tranny and plan on getting at least a 2800 rpm stall, i want to run know more than 6500 rpms max. the engine will go in a 65 el camino with a 3.73 rearend. i want to run somewhere in the twelves in the quarter. what would you suggest. i have no problems with a solid lift cam if i could make enough horsepower over a hydraulic to make it worth my while. thanks in advance for the advice.

Go to Pat Kelleys web page(do a search)and click on DCR,enter your info and try different cam profiles from lunati. Not sure the best DCR,maybe someone else will chime in with more info.
You can do a search on DCR,Or
You can call Harold Brookshire at Lunati
I used a cam from harold in a 400 like you have and loved it.

I guess I spoke too soon so now have to ask how much cam "unruliness" can you stand?

You may think again on your chamber size vs flat-top pistons b/c I figure your SCR will be too high to run pump gas.

Try to go with a schosh under 10 to 1 CR. and match your DCR to the cams intake valve closing point using a down in the hole number of .025" and then your headgasket thickness anywhere from .015", .020". .022" .028" or so, .038" or 9" to above .040"s.. AND Shoot for a quench distance of from .035"s to say, .045"s!!!

And I had to tweek my cheap, .020", steel shim 350 headgaskets so I could use them on my 406 SB by hand..

Anyway, probably a CC XS274S, a 282S or an XS282S solid cam will get you what you want.....

PS., and you may have to use "D"-dished pistons or round dished ones to hold the CR at below 10 to 1?? Or bigger chambered heads..

I'm thinking 76 cc heads along with true flat-top pistons for a 406 motor but may be off???

With flat tops, your at about10.7-10.9 CR.
Too much for old stock heads.
You need a 12cc dish piston for about 10.3 with zero deck ht. and 67cc.
For cam, w/10.3, go with a 280/284f10 lunati solid. Then after you save some money, get some Brodix RR 200cc heads w/cnc 67cc chambers.
Check this post out for a similar build and dyno.
