: Cam selection 402
NITRO Jan 23rd, 04, 3:56 PM Hi all, I am removing my heads to freshen up the guides, and while I'm at it I am going to do a mild port and polishing on them and change the cam. Here is what I currently have:
402 block +.030 (408 CI)
10.25:1 Compression
Stock intake, heads (3964290's), ex manifolds, carb and distributer.
I have a M20 Trans with 3.31 rear gears and 25.5 inch dia tires.
Currenty stock cam .460I/.488E, 213I/217E @ .050 with 115 deg lobe angle.
I am considering the two following:
Comp Cams Magnum 280H: .520/.520, 230/230 @.050 with a 110 deg lobe sep angle.
Comp Cams Nestalgis Plus: .530I/.524E, 229I/236E @.050 with a 112 lobe sep angle.
Will the 280H provide enough vacume for the brakes? Has anyone had experience with one or both of these? Which do you think is better, or do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks, Jim
Texas70 Jan 23rd, 04, 4:12 PM The 280H would be a great improvement, but the pro's here will know better than I... graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I do have a brand new 280H "K-kit" that has all the compatible parts in one kit that I will not be using after all as I will be going with a bigger cam in my 454. If you are interested, we could work something out. E-mail me if interested.

Chevelle Donzelle Jan 23rd, 04, 11:13 PM I have the same combo you have with minor exceptions as follows: 9.25 to 1 compression and a weiand dual plane aluminum high rise. I use stock exhaust manifolds and dump them into 3 in. madrel bent header pipes into series 40 flowmasters. The cam I was reccommended was a Crane Cam power max H272-2 dual grind. Intake lift is 515 w/ 272 duration and exhaust lift is 510 w/ duration 284. It dynoed (engine only) with 366 hp and 435 ft. lbs. of torque. Not bad in a 71 pollution pig 402 with a quadrajet and a set of cast irons!! With your compression you should squeek out some additional HP. Especially if you add headers. I have plenty of vacuum and a nice idle.
BORDERT Jan 24th, 04, 1:35 PM Hey Nitro ,that 280H cam kit of Texas70 will be a real nice performance upgrade in your setup with the slightly higher compression of your engine.
I would suggest if you can negotiate a deal with Texas that you also go out and get yourself a decent intake (e.g Performer RPM).I think you will be impressed with the overall difference.
Good luck and stay in touch and let us all know how it turns out.
pdq67 Jan 25th, 04, 12:39 AM I advise to go with the good old CC 282S solid AND gain more power everywhere!! But then again, I'm a solid lifter cam sorta guy!!!
It's basically the solid eqiv. of the 280 magnum cam..

FRYNTYR Jan 25th, 04, 1:08 AM 280 ISKY megacam is a nice choice also. Powers my 69 into the 11's with a set of bowl blended 781's, 11-1 CC pistons netting me around 10.25-1 SCR. It's a std bore "poor man's" 427. backed up with a 4-speed as well. I've ran this grind in three different BB's now and felt it was much better than other comparable grinds.
ddeennis Jan 25th, 04, 1:47 AM nitro this might be of some interest to you!!!! one of our fellow members here on the board "sgaylord" just got done with his engine being dynoed.
his motor is as follows
396 (406)
770 cfm avenger carb
performer plus dual plane intake
290 heads with no port work just 2.19/1.88 valves
280 comp cam
compression was at 9.2 to 1
and on the dyno it had no accy's and there was 2" primary headers with out mufflers. and timming was at 38-39 degress.
it made 434 hp and 471 ft lbs of torque!
you can search back a few pages and click on his dyno sheet of the motor. just look for "better day at the dyno" i believe is the header.
pretty stout motor for simple parts........
NITRO Jan 25th, 04, 8:28 PM Thanks for all the responces. Looks like the 280H kit it is.
TEXAS, you got mail.

67 Mark IV Jan 26th, 04, 4:48 PM Hi NITRO, I just rebuilt a 402 in my 67 SS, I used the Nostalgic plus cam - 524/530. Comp cams recommends to leave out the inner valve spring's during cam break in. I'm running a 402 with KB 9.5:1 pistons,Edel. Performer RPM intake,Holley 750 vac sec,215 Oval ports w/2.06/1.72 valves,1 3/4 Heddman headers,M20 - 4 speed,American Thunder exhaust and 3.73 12 bolt posi.It only has 1 hour and 6 miles and run's excellent. It idles at 1000 RPM with a nice lope,Total timing is set at 36 deg,I would have used a UD 280/288 but it wasn't available last summer, for now the CC Nostalgic will do. Good Luck , Mark
