I'm considering buying a fuel cell for my elcamino. What kind should I get and why? What is better aluminum or plastic. Why do some have foam? I'm getting my EC ready for the track. I told myself I wasn't going to do any racing or buying of parts untill I got my home loan, and found out last week I've been approved!
My fuel system as of now is the stock tank w/ sump. Aeromotive pump, 1/2 line to the regulator.
I think I can be more consistant with my car weight having the cell opposed to judging fuel level with the stock gauge. I'm going to drop it off at maco and don't want to cut into fresh paint.
Thanks All
Aaron

Aaron;
I would go with the plastic. I've been told that the aluminum ones crack, especially in street cars. Never had a problem with my plastic.
The foam is there to slow things down just a bit if you should have a catastropic rupture of the fuel cell. The fuel is still going to spill out, it just won't gush. I have been told, but never experienced that methanol can dissolve some of the cheaper foams.
Which ever you choose, a fuel cell is the way to go if you are serious about your fuel management.
Good luck

I've always heard that the plastic ones allow for seapage of gas fumes and the fittings do not seal well at the sump, so thats what I went with aluminum. Plus they look better IMO.
And the foam isn't in there to "slow things down", its there to prevent fuel sloshing from stoping/starting/turning, etc.

I had a plastic one in my chevelle. It never gave me any problems whatsoever, but did run out of fuel on the streets (didn't have a sending unit). But I decided that I wanted my trunk space back, so I took it out.

Thanks all for your response. I know it probably seems like a easy dession buying a fuel cell. But I like to get the scop on stuff before/ or if I spend my doe.

Justin is correct about the foam.
Justin;
Thank you. I stand corrected.

If you plan on putting the cell "in the bed" go with aluminum...the sunlight plays havoc on the plastic
