: 1968 El Camino SS 396
philipswanson Apr 5th, 08, 8:49 PM I was wondering what this car is worth? Nice straight body but was repainted. Have not been able to verify matching numbers. A genuine SS 396 with all the right trim. TH 400 tranny. 12 bolt rear with boxed stab rear bars. Needs a little corrosion work around the upper passenger side of the rear window but very minor. California car and looks like it never has been in the salt. Rare disc brake option. Nice new Cragers and original rally wheels included in the deal. Runs fine with rebuild receipts from 3 years ago. Needs a few items to be totally original like carb, intake, etc. Has factory air but compressor is in a box. What do you think it is worth? The guy is desperate.
oldtimebaseballfan Apr 6th, 08, 12:57 PM If you can get detailed pics and give more info., it would help. How is the bed, floors, interior, check the engine codes and castings, what options, colors, VIN, trim tag.
philipswanson Apr 7th, 08, 6:56 PM No rust in floorboards or anywhere else except minor corrosion the the rear window upper passenger side corner. It's a CA car. No VIN on engine. We have looked everywhere. Probably got machined off. Date code is E 24 8 which fits the car. Can't find official build date anywhere but we think the 396 is factory. Hard to know for sure.

68elkyss396 Apr 7th, 08, 7:31 PM Sounds a lot like the 68 Elky SS I just recently bought. Mine also 138 code true SS, 396 though not original engine (a 67 engine, 3 year old rebuild), TH400, 12 bolt, power disc brakes(thought not original 4 piston calipers), bucket seats, console, 15" Rallye wheels and hub caps, power steering, fresh paint over straight body, minor surface rust in the bed. I paid $6600 and everyone I talked to says I got a steal. NADA puts the value at about 10K to 12K last time I checked for a good condition car. Which build date were you looking for? The car itself has the week, month and year on the cowl tag.
RAMBO Apr 7th, 08, 7:36 PM I paid $8k for mine 2 years ago in a little worse condition than what you described, and i thought i paid a fair price, maybe a little high, but it was a friends' and i couldn't low ball him too much.
True 1388 car... non origonal 396 that barely ran, TH400, 12 bolt rear, Drum brakes, AC car, bucket seat interior (all new interior stuff), ugly paint (only minor rust lower front fenders), all suspension shot, exhaust shot, came with rally wheels and new tires.
philipswanson May 10th, 08, 2:51 PM I bought this car but paid !2.5K for it. If I knew how to post a picture on this forum, I would do it.
