I have a 1968 el Camino with a frozen 307 engine and a powerglide transmission. I would like to install a fuel injected V8 with an overdrive auto transmission. My plan is to purchase an insurance write-off Chevy truck and transplant the engine, transmission, wiring harness, sensors, computer etc. I want to avoid any cross member cutting, oil pan clearance issues etc. I am not interested in high performance but instead the reliability of a fuel injected engine and the ability to cruise at highway speeds.
It seems I should be avoiding the lsx version engines and be looking for a 1988 to 1998 Chev truck with a vortec or tbi engine. I know that the fuel supply will be an issue but it looks the el Camino Store has solved that issue with an aftermarket fuel injection tank.
Any suggestions on a suitable donor vehicle would be appreciated.
Thanks

I'd recommend going with an LT1 over a 88-98 Chevy Truck motor. The LT1 is Tuned Port Injection, where as the motors you're looking at are Throttle Body Injection (TBI). The LT1 will bolt directly in with stock motor mounts and will also make a LOT more power.

What is your reasoning for avoiding the LSx engine family? You can get a 5.3L/4L60E combo very reasonably and you will have excellent streetability.

I agree the a 5.3/4L60E combo would be a great choice for your swap. There is stuff available from the aftermarket now that make it a bolt in swap there are even a few different header brands to choose from. If you look hard enough you should be able to find a 5.3 and tranny for around $1500 to $2000. The biggest pain in these swaps is the wiring but you would be dealing with that with the LT1 or Vortec anyways. There are companies out there that make the wiring much simpler as well if you are willing to spend a little extra. Not to mention the fact that the 5.3 makes more power than a Vortec as well as better gas mileage.

I have an option to pick up a rebuildable lt1 for a great price (i pick the price). Where do I start? I want to build a street car, nothing out of control. I am looking for directional information. Suggestions? I am also looking for opinions. What tranny would you guys recommend using?

Auto: 4L60E/700R4. However a TH350/400 will bolt up
Manual: TKO or T56 depending on your driving habits and fabrication skills.
