: Bellhousing Questions w/Pic
Cheap68 Apr 5th, 08, 1:36 PM I have two bellhousings available to me. They are both the older open bottom cast pieces. After searching it seems I can use the 3925505 with the adapter ring, but the 3704922 does not need the ring. The shift fork hole is smaller. Can I use this bellhousing? If for nothing else, just to install trans for shifter hole location. Why does the 3704922(right) have a hole an the very top?
Thanks David

bdc1013 Apr 5th, 08, 1:50 PM the one on the right looks like its going to give you problems with the stock clutch fork. What engine and trans are you using?
Cheap68 Apr 5th, 08, 2:02 PM 454 if it clears machine shop inspection and a M20.
Wally Apr 5th, 08, 4:03 PM 3704922 is a 55 to 57 chevy big car.

Wally is correct.
TAKE THE ONE ON THE RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I DO NOT think there will be any problem with the TO bearing fork. But, if there is, simply trim it with a diegrinder.
Better to have the correct hole.
As far as I know, the front sheetmetal cover and the lower pan are still available from Chevy parts dept.
TAKE THE RIGHT ONE!
By the way, these are only for the big, 168 tooth flywheel. You will need to use either a 62-earlier (about 70 on some trucks) starter that bolts to the bell housing, or, a starter with a CAST IRON nose and a staggered bolt pattern (such as for a 70 454 Chevelle with 4sp, NOT auto).

Quickshift Apr 5th, 08, 7:44 PM I just installed a '55 chevy bellhousing just like the one you have pictured on the right in my '67 chevelle. The hole for the clutch fork was not big enough so i had to enlarge it with a cutoff wheel and die grinder and so far it is working fine.
pdq67 Apr 6th, 08, 10:33 AM The other is a P/U bellhousing that need's a spacer ring.
Get it too if you want and keep it for swap bait!
Rings can be bought here that I saved for this!

However, GM cast literally millions of the 460 486 bell housing to cover the larger flywheel and clutch in 1970's light trucks, both 6 and 8 cylinder. The problem is the Muncie SM 465 truck transmissions had a 5 1/8" (5.125) front bearing retainer, so you can't use it with the smaller car transmissions.
Luckily, a 4 11/16" x 5 1/8" bushing is available from Novak part # BR-4 (about $40) at www.novak-adapt.com or 877-602-1500.
Dennymac, (Dennis), also sells these here. He recently said “I appreciate the recommendation. If you want to include me as a friendly supplier of these adapter rings, I get $28US delivered for them. My contact information is cell phone 502-558-1043, and email is aguy@dennymac.com Best of luck.
Thanks again. Dennymac Dennis McLeod
I bought one of the adapter rings, and used the truck bell housing, which cost $25 at my local salvage yard, where they use the truck bell housings for door stops.
The 486 dust cover is GM part #340 254."

Cheap68 Apr 6th, 08, 8:59 PM Thanks for that ring information. Is that dust cover the bottom of the housing that I need?

pdq67 Apr 7th, 08, 7:42 PM Tom,
Please answer him b/c I think it is for the round bell housings so want to be right here?
I flat forget if it's for the open-bottomed or not??
Thanks,
