: Muffler Selection
SpeedAddiction Sep 26th, 04, 9:22 AM Well after many months, the chevelle is up and running again. Put the motor in 402 and took it to the exhaust shop with open headers. Well, of course it was loud running around with open headers, and this was expected. My plan from the get go was to have the exhaust end in front of the rear tires diagonally with chrome tips. I wanted to run an X pipe, but my crossmember hangs down pretty low since I put a T56 tranny in there. I bought a set of bullets because I wanted a round muffler to run in the system since I wasn't going over the axle and wasn't able to put a muffler behind the rear pans like normal. Well, got the exhaust put on and it looks killer, but it sounds just like it did with open headers it just has direction now. It is rediculous. I am 20 years old and LOVE the sound of a loud bowtie, but this is absolutely obsurd. Can anyone suggest another round muffler that will cut this sound down? Or has anyone put a conventional shaped muffler next to the driveshaft tunnel? This is my daily driver and I don't think I'd make it a week without getting to know all the cops in the area. The motor is very healthy and has some lope to it and I still want it loud, but not like this. Do you think just putting an X-pipe on there the sound will be better?
Dan Orgill Sep 26th, 04, 9:45 AM Flowmaster has a long, round muffler that I believe are called " Hush " mufflers. My friend at his exhaust shop threw one on my truck just to try it and they are quiet. Also, this probably not what you want to hear, but adding a set of tailpipes that exit at the rear of the car will tone things down substantially.
Slowpoke70 Sep 26th, 04, 3:13 PM You could always add a second set of round mufflers in place of a section of pipe.
Like this:
Header Collecter=====1st Muffler=====2nd Muffler
Instead of:
Header Collector=================Muffler.
Slowpoke70 Sep 26th, 04, 3:17 PM Just Remembered, they make Header mufflers! Bold them straight to the header collectors and then run the piping from there. It could make another set of possibilities.
Like so:
Collector/HeaderMuffler==1stMuffler==2ndMuffler
Or
Collector/HeaderMuffler==========Muffler
Granted, any of these Double/Tripple muffler set ups would be HEAVY
SpeedAddiction Sep 26th, 04, 7:49 PM 4spdrat I am not looking for something quiet by any means, just not looking for open header volume
Slowpoke70 - I would if I could. Because of my crossmember and the longtubes, there are bends everywhere else in the system. This is the only place to mount mufflers.
Pat Kelley Sep 26th, 04, 8:42 PM Dynomax UltraFlow welded ovals. Great deep sound. Bullets are like not having mufflers. I've seen guys get kick off of drag strips for being too loud with them.
bowtie455 Sep 26th, 04, 10:48 PM hey pat,
are you running x or h-pipes with those ultraflos? i'm trying to choose a happy medium between max horsepower and a deep,roaring sound.
Adman Sep 26th, 04, 11:41 PM Hooker Aero Chambers all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I replaced my 40's with these guys. NO resonance at all at crusing but its so loud outside on acceleration smile.gif
sinned Sep 26th, 04, 11:43 PM Still have those Flowmasters?? Email me teichera@hotmail.com
Adman Sep 26th, 04, 11:50 PM Check your mail man smile.gif
SpeedAddiction Sep 27th, 04, 12:46 AM well I am looking for something small because they ahve to mount underneath the front floor pans. I saw the round 6" ultraflows and the ovals do you think they would produce about the same sound?
Zman Sep 27th, 04, 2:49 AM Well, someone has to say it...
If you like loud, you could go with good ole glass pacs.
Anything bolted directly to the header will burn out in no time.(ie Header mufflers)
Either an H, or X pipe will help quiet it down some.
FWIW, I run the 4" bullets with an H pipe on my fairly radical 355...it IS loud, but not unbareable..especially inside. Pipes dump behind the rear wheel, and it is surprizingly (sp) quiet inside the car.
When you romp on it, THEN it sounds like open headers. However, my Nova is NOT a daily driver either.....

thunderstruck507 Sep 27th, 04, 4:20 PM I really like my Flowtech Terminator (now called afterburner I think)
Nice deep tone thats very quiet inside and decent outside, but when you stomp is they roar to life pretty well but not loud enough to alert law enforcement 7 blocks away
sinned Sep 27th, 04, 5:36 PM I like alerting law enforcement 7 blocks away, makes the chase a little more exciting. :D
Not really, but I do like the noise.
sinned Sep 27th, 04, 10:37 PM Adam, did you get my e-mail?
