I am trying to install a Gen V 454 with a Milodon #30955 pan into my '66. Problem is I am hitting the cross member with the bottom of the pan...!!!! How the heck is this thing suppose to work??? Or is it???

I bought the motor with the pan and pickup, and it has that part number engraved on the pan. The thing is resting right on the crossmember with the motor mount bolts installed, and by the way, I have Moroso solid motor mounts.

Got any ideas what went wrong here????

TIA
Mike

Mike,
I have the new Milodon catalog in front of me. It says the pan fits all Chevy Chassis except 62-67 Nova and specifically says "including 1966 & 67 Chevelles"
I do know that Moroso has 2 different mounts, one is taller than the other. Maybe that is the problem ?

It seems you have the wrong motor mounts. Compare the factory pieces against the moroso's.

Please let us know what U find out. I just bought that same pan for my 502/509 for my 67 chevelle. I also have the moroso solid mounts. I have no problem with the 396 W'stock GM pan. I also have the GM performance parts oil pan for Mark 5/6 for chevelle camaro, but bought found the Milodon cheap and liked the look of the gold pan with black block.

Mike,
Just wanted to add ... if this is a street driven vehicle, now might be the time to rethink the solid mounts. I really do not think they are needed for the street, and can really jolt things when you hit any kind of bumps. The Lakewood performance mounts are up to almost anything the Rat can give them and will give it a bit of cushion too.
Just my opinion,

Just a little more info.. The motor mounts were used previously with the 402 that came with the car. But, it had a Moroso deep sump pan.

I suspect it to be the motor mount problem. I have never seen anything happen like this before...going to look at the Summit catalog and see if I can trace it further..

Thanks guys..

Mike

Ahhhhhh :D I can help you with this one. I have a 1967 SS 396 Chevelle and bought the Milodon Stock replacement pan for my rebuild. When I went to install the motor back, My oil pan was resting on the cross member. Now I did change the motor mounts, So I double checked the new ones to the old ones and they were the same. The problem lies where the pan starts to curve downward. If you notice the stock original pan, Its "dimpled" There on the side where as the Milodon is not. They look identicle but they are not!!! I end up calling Milodon and told them of the problem, They claim they never ever heard of this problem and gave me a refund. I bought I stock replacement from OPG and low and behold, No Problem :D So this may be your problem as well since our cars are similar.

As far as the solid motor mounts go. I just bought both sized Moroso offers and there is only about 1/8 inch differance in the height. I've used these on the street for 15 years and never had any problem with roughness when hitting bumps, jolts etc.

SSPete...

I think you hit the nail on the head. I do not have the stock pan to check against and I did not buy this one, it came with the motor when I bought it. I guess I have to bite the bullet and buy the original style or get a stock one from the wrecking yard. As this motor came out of a truck, will a truck pan and pickup work in the Chevelle??

Thanks guys..

Damnn....more money...OH well...

I would play it safe and just buy one from, Tear One, OPG or any other place that sells repos. Or you can see if anyone on here has one laying around they could sell ya. I feel your pain my brotha :( Its not fun to pull it out and re do it, But I can assure you that it will be worth afterwards.

YEAR ONE Says that their pan for the GEN V 454 "requires cross member modification"....

SSPete..was that a GEN V you put in that '67??

Anybody got a pan that lives near Detroit that I can "borrow" to see what fits????

Then I will buy the correct one. Because I have to change the pickup tube also..

sent you part number for oil pan, I also went with Sanderson Jet coated Headers, Fit like a glove. I couldn't be happier with the headers, They weren't cheap though

Hey guys..

researched the pan problem. Milodon never had any reports fo problems...we know that is not true...anyway. I got to a guy they recommended at a Chevy dealer in Washington. He gave me a part number (12495360) for a Gen V/VI pan kit that kets you put the motor in an "early Chevelle/Camaro" comes with pan, pickup, dipstick and some main cap bolts (I guess for clearance solution). It is only a 4 quart pan though, not for high performance requirements.

This same kit is in the OPG catalog for $239.99. I ordered it for GMPartsdirect for $157.00, including shipping. graemlins/hurray.gif

I will let you know how it fits when it arrives.

Take care

If you want a deep sump pan, the Moroso 20413 fits the Gen V & VI in the '66 Chevelle. Only down side is this is a kicked out pan - remote oil filter is necessary. We also ran into the same thing with fitting a 454HO crate into a '66. Went through 3 different pans till we got the Moroso. Also, just be aware, the Gen V,VI has 2 engine mount boss locations. The rear motor mount boss may have to be removed slightly depending on what headers you are running.

Kick out pans are a tight fit in a 66-67, since the right and left front edges of the pan are VERY close to the frame. My Moroso was also very tricky to get in place, but it does fit...if you want to go that route.

I have both the stock gen4 chevelle pan and the mark5/6 milodon # 30955 pan lying side by side and they appear they are the same depth on the flat portion before the sump. What hits on the pan the edge of the pan on the flat portion???? The stock pan is curved and the milodon has squared edges. I also have the GM kit U bought for mark5/6 the kit comes with pan/pickup/4 studs for windage tray/windage tray/ dipstick&tube/and pan gasket. The book says 4qts but it looks like it will hold 6qts. I live half hour north of detriot. Please post as to the results with the GM pan, maybe I will have to sell the mildon. Picked it up on EBAY for $40 should get that back no problem. GOOD LUCK

My pan hits on the flat area just forward of the sump. it looks like you could hammer it into place, but, I don't think that is a good idea. I live in Clinton Township, just south of Mt. Clemens, 15 Mile and Little Mack. I shoudl get the new pan the first fo next week and we sill see what fits....

Talk to guys later..

I was so pissed when I droppped my motor in and found the problem I actually tried giving it a few good wacks to dimple the sides to make it fit. There was no way you can even ding those pans from the spot it needs, Unless your Barry Bonds taking a wack at it :D
