: looking for a good Fan to cool off BBC
mirage2991 Apr 2nd, 08, 11:04 AM I was wondering if any of you have experience with the following fans:
http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/500/555/555-52116.jpg
and/or
http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/400/400/400-298.jpg
The Flex-a-lite is twice the price of the Jegs, and to be honest I'm leaning towards it, because I don't want to mess around :)
is it worth the extra dough?
thoughts?
thanks!
Skeeveman Apr 2nd, 08, 11:29 AM I use this derale fan on mine, works great, keeps my bb cool here in the georgia heat.

66 Chevelle Bob Apr 2nd, 08, 11:58 AM JB: Before making a decision consider going "Whole Hog" and buying an Aluminum Radiator in addition to your electric fans. That way you'll have the best of both worlds. If you really want to cure any heating problems add a Hi-flo High volume aftermarket Water Pump-Then you'll have the real deal. I'm using an Alumitech Radiator with 11" twin-spal fans and a Hi-Flo short Stewart Water pump on my 66 396 BB..@400 hp. I couln't be happier now. I liked working with Don at Alumitech since he's knowledgeable about cooling issues and I could call him at any time to pick his brain. As for just your two choices of fans, I would pick a curved blade over a straight blade but that's just me. Good luck on your decision..!!

mirage2991 Apr 2nd, 08, 1:31 PM I guess I should have given out more information:
Already have an aftermarket alum rad, and a high flow water pump, with a high flow 160 thermostat.
I have one of those electrical fan with the shroudles metal blades, and I am not very happy with it...works ok, but I want something deadly reliable.
Hp on the motor is around 600 give or take a few, 10-1 cr. But, I'm thinking ahead, and I want to be covered in the cooling dept in case I go either bigger or blower :)
Xtreme70SS396 Apr 2nd, 08, 1:36 PM What Bob said above - give Don at Alumitech a call, he's got a SPAL setup that should fit your need exactly.
I'm not sure on the flex-a-lite or Jegs, they may be fine - but you want CFM, and Don't got the perfect setup. If you do a quick search for Alumitech and SPAL I think you'll see others here that have it and posted results.
mirage2991 Apr 2nd, 08, 1:39 PM cool, I'll check it out. I believe the flex-a-lite is rated at 4700cfm, which is why I was leaning towards that (jegs' is only 2400)

This fan and rad (in the above link) from Alumitech is what I am running in my 540 BBC 70 Chevelle. Drop in fit and works awesome. Does not go above 190 even on the hottest days.
BillsCamino Apr 3rd, 08, 6:50 AM GM clutch fan, shroud, and a generic aluminum radiator work fine on my 11 to 1 540.
NEVER over 180 degrees even down here in the South...in traffic.
robo3 Apr 3rd, 08, 8:29 AM these work great and are the cheepest price on e bay heres a link

be cool and summit sells these for over 300.00
mirage2991 Apr 3rd, 08, 10:00 AM Thanks for the help!
I'm not sure that I can fit dual fans now...since it's for my camaro, I believe my core is about 20" wide...I'll have to measure to be sure...
rj67bu Apr 3rd, 08, 10:37 AM a shroud makes all the difference and saves a lot of money
mad70ss Apr 3rd, 08, 10:54 AM I just threw in the Flex a Lite in my BB, before sitting in traffic it would get to 205-210, now it wont go past 190.
Stewart I water pump, 160 stat and the flex a lite. love it!
so far of course
mirage2991 Apr 3rd, 08, 3:24 PM welp, my core is 22 1/8 " by 19". Looks like my "design limitations" will dictate a single fan. The most powerfull fan I can find is this one:
http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/400180.jpg
Flex-a-lite Xtreme rated at 3300cfm.
I figure it'll beat what I have now:

Autoengineer Apr 4th, 08, 4:55 PM Anyone having trouble supplying power to these dual fan setups? Some of them draw around 50 amps. My car only has a 60 amp alternator! Are you having to upgrade your alternators?
echristie Apr 5th, 08, 7:04 PM I'm running the Flex-a-Lite with an Alumitech radiator on my 496.

bikeron Apr 7th, 08, 1:21 AM Anyone having trouble supplying power to these dual fan setups? Some of them draw around 50 amps. My car only has a 60 amp alternator! Are you having to upgrade your alternators?
Yes, If you have AC and electric fans and you run the head lights and you have a stereo and you have an MSD box you need a bigger alternator and some changes in the wiring that goes from the alternator to the relay. I suggest not using a single wire system on the replacement alternator.
If you have Fuel injection it's even worse...I have all the above and run a 110A 10SI alternator. It just makes it..
67_Malibu_Danno Apr 9th, 08, 8:43 AM I have the Derale dual fan that Jake posted, but I had to make a custom mounting setup because I refused to push those plastic mounting spikes (shown in Jake's picture) though my brand new aluminum core like the instructions say. Also the fit was a little long and I wanted to seal off the large gaps around the sides. It was a little more involved than I would have liked but it turned out ok and I managed to slide it in my 67.
Here are some pics while it was out showing how I mounted it. It is also one of those that draw 50A so I got a 100A alternator.
I haven't got the engine running yet, but I hooked the fan up to a battery one night when I was drinking and I thought it was was going to fly around the garage. It was really scary how powerful those Bosch electic motors were. This 4000cfm puller sells for about $220 at summit and ought to keep that 396 cool at a red light in the cali heat.
Jake, how loud is this thing when it kicks on in your car?
mirage2991 Apr 11th, 08, 12:09 AM cool, thanks all for the pictures and feedback...new fan should be in order soon...well I can't spend money on parts until I close on my house May 6th, but after that, it's open season on JEGS lol.

Yup, I don't like using those ties either, not only did I hate the idea of pushing those things through the fins of my new radiator, I don't like the idea of the weight of the fans being on the core tubes. So, I made some little 90º brackets and attached the fan across the top and bottom, using the shroud and the top and bottom of the radiator. There are many ways to mount this thing. Here is a pic mine installed. http://project71.net/skeeveman/Cooling/IMG_0443.JPG
These things move monstrous amounts of air, here in the GA summer heat, with traffic, it keeps the 540 cool, and never gets over 180.
As far as noise goes, well, they make some noise, but with the engine running, and the hood shut, you don't really hear it, unless you're listening for it, see what I'm saying? In fact, I was thinking about setting up a discrete confirmation light that the fans are running, just for peace of mind.
Here is a video my buddy Spencer shot of me pulling it into the garage, the fans were running the whole time, and you really don't hear them till the very end. Hope this helps.

67_Malibu_Danno Apr 12th, 08, 2:01 AM Holy crap! That sounds like a jet winding down -- Wicked!
I'm going to wire it up this weekend and I was going to put a little LED on my knee-knocker gauge cluster to tell me when it is on. (funny because a friend gave me these LEDs out of an aircraft, perfect). Thanks for the clip Jake; really made my night.
