Hey Guys,

I really hate my rusted out trunk. Everything else is solid except for the rusty trunk. Sometime in my Chevelles life the trunk was rusty and someone came along and spray painted the black stop rust stuff on it. I need to have it replaced because my fuel cell is back there and I am afraid it's not safe the metal is so thin. I know some of you own/work in body shops how much money should I be looking to spend on replacing the whole trunk as far as labor is concerned. I was looking at this one piece unit from Ground up.

TRUNK FLOOR COMPLETE ONE PIECE 1971-72 CHEVELLE http://www.ss396.com/mm5/graphics/00000007/RTF-171.jpg Quantity in Basket: None
Code: RTF-171
Price: $489.95
At the same time Do you guys think I should ditch the fuel cell and buy a gas tank. Opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

A minimum of $75 an hour in Jersey, don't know about your state. You might not be finished buying parts with this repair because it attaches to the tail panel and L & R trunk drops offsas well as the inner wheel houses- all will most likely have some rust damage.

You cannot do the one piece trunk in a complete car. The rear quarters have to be removed to use this one piece floor, so you are forced into using the 3 piece kit. If we were doing it, including finishing the seams and priming and spatter painting the trunk, we would look for somewhere in the 16 to 20 hour range. 2 to 2 1/2 days

That sounds like a pretty good deal, it took me two weeks to get mine in.

Thanks a lot guys I just want to know what I'm getting into before I go and order a $500 part. I'm glad I asked LOL I will talk with the body shop and get an estimate, I just wanted a base place to start so I don't get ripped off.

just do what we're doing and put it in yourself

of course, having half a quarter panel gone does help, we still hav to use a lot of finesse to get it in:sad:

Some places sell a two piece trunk kit, which I used in my 71, as I would rather have one seam than 2. Around here in NC, you can get it done for $40 an hour

What would I use to put it in Glue? I'M HORRIBLE with tools I wouldn't know the first step on how to even get it out let alone to get one back in.

No Really I wish there was someone in the area that could teach me. :pout:

Where are you at. Ill be glad to help. There are a lot of new glues out there. Alot of body shops are using them now. We used it to install some quarters on a 69 firebird and turned out awsome as you dont have to worry about warping the metal with heat as a trunk floor I think weld it in. Never seen one glued yet.

3 piece from removal to completeion took about 12 hours in my garage. With the help from a plasma cutter and mig. I like to do things myself whenever I can. Materials cost enough

There is no way I would use a 3 piece or 2 piece trunk when you have that nice piece of sheetmetal at your finger tips.

I used the three piece kit from goodmark when I had mine done also something to think about doing while you have it out is replacing your gas tank and straps.

What do you mean, you have to remove a quarter panel to install a one piece trunk pan? If you remove the body off the frame you can squeeze the panel in without a problem. Mine took about 14 hours to remove the old one, grind the old panel off, punch weld holes in the new panel, and weld into place. The body was already off the frame. But that only takes about a good 2 hrs to get the body off. Finally my labor bill was 0.00. If you want to see how it was done, checkout my website page 6.
