Hi I have a 70 Chevelle SS 396. We bought a 396 and I just recently decoded it as a 66 Chevelle 396 375 hp motor. I was wondering if it is better to replace it with an origonal 396 350 hp motor even if it isnt numbers matching because we have the origonal build sheet. The rest of the car is origonal and is done meticulously. And if so what date code should I look for if the car was built in the second week of October 1970.

Paul. The reality is, Once the original engine is gone, What you replace it with doesn't really matter.
That being said. Someone looking for a "close to original" car May pay more for an engine that is "date correct"
At the same time, The L78 even though its note date correct, May add some value to a NOM car. There are so many variables, You can't contemplate them all.
Me personally. If it wasn't the original engine, I'd prefer a mild 454 over a stock L34

A 1970 model car built in October 1970?????
If not the original engine....might as well go 454 or 496

If it was built in the second week of October 1970, you don't have a '70 but a '71! If it doesn't have the original motor it really doesn't matter what engine you have in it.

496 and I did for my '67 SS/RS Camaro!
I've had my stock engine 1200 miles from new hopped up w/ a great old -151 cam.
Next, my old high-winding junk301!
Next, my .060" over, 11.5 to 1 CR'd, 409 "W" engine w/ trip's on it! Talk about a "W" engine BB that rpmm'ed like a SB!!!
I traded my car in '73 b/c of a growing family and got it back years later w/ a hopped up 300hp/327 that I pulled to make way for my 406 SB, and 12,000 or so miles later I pulled it for my 496!
And if my 496 doesn't do it for me, I will either blow it w/ a 250 or a 256 OR make a 588"er!!
Right, if it AIN'T the OEM engine, you are cloning for money, imho!!
