Hi I have a chance to buy a 1999 5.7 vortec long block ,with all sheet metal ,needs lifters dirt cheap ,Now my question is what is it worth ,has 32k on it. thank for any advice Slim

well, the roller lifters won't be cheap. Can you hear it run first?

Hi, No the motor is already out ,plan on doing a complete tare down and recon it ,want to install a decent cam and a eldo,intake and carb (going into a 78 1/2 ton ) not looking for wild just pipy, maybe! It a every day driver and am retired so can't afford a to do to much. but open for any imfo or advice on this . thanks Slim

Thats a nice block to start with, but remember it will have no provision for a mechanical fuel pump.

The stock GM roller lifters actually aren't nearly as expensive as aftermarket. I want to say around $160 or so for a set.

Correct, the factory style lifters with no link bars arent priced bad at all.

Hi, Haveing my son check on them ,he works for a GM dealer, Now what would you guys say about porting heads? or at least match the gaskets. Have been doing that for years ,like to let it breath, thanks for the advice,Oh already have a elc,fuel pump on truck so fuel isn't a big deal. thanks again Slim

Core charge at Scoggin-Dickey is $175. There's a lot of them out there, I wouldn't go over about $300 IF he'd guarantee the heads to not be cracked. You can get those rollers all day for $75 a set, heads are worth more than the rest of the engine alltogether, IMHO
