Too many "bad batches" of gas recently. Need to lower dcr or add timignretard for those occasions.

Question: Does the MSD retard kit plug into an MSD 6AL?

Do y'all think dialing a cam back from +7 to +4 will have any meaningful impact? I'm thinking its more trouble than its worth.

Surprised to read this thread.

What is your current DCR - I thought you were in the 10.5 range? And with alum heads?

Oh, like 8.6 or so. Too high. For sure. Only select batches of gas. I'm thinking a timing retard would be nice so I can dial it back a few when needed.

Was hoping to hear some experience with timing retards.

And no, I'm not putting holes in the tripower lid for alcohol injection. Be nice though.

Gene,

This the retard box that I use in conjunction with my nitrous system.

Don't remember how I have mine wired up,(depends on your setup) but this link might help. MSD uses small plug-in modules with a predetermined values(i.e. 4 degrees). Looks alot like their plugin RPM modules.

Hope this helps. smile.gif

MSD makes a 15 deg dial just for this.

mix the gas with race fuel instead of buying an ignition retard for a bad batch of gas.

It's a cross country vehicle! Other than disconnecting the vacuum advance ( which works fine), I'd prefer to take incrementally less timing out. I'll carry some Toluene with me. 1 gal to 15 seems to help enough.

Darren, it does help. That was the only unit I saw, I was hoping for something much simpler. One stage with a dial.

I thought you were originally talking about your Chevelle. I have noticed the same thing happening in my '02 Chev truck 5.3L. Just hitting 50K and it seems almost overnite I have had to jump 2 octane points to keep it from rattling.

check out ebay too, lots of good deals out there. just be careful when buying stuff like this on ebay, it pays to do some research on the seller.

Ebay: msd timing control (http://motors.search.ebay.com/msd-timing-control_W0QQsofocusZbsQQsbrftogZ1QQcatrefZC6QQfrom ZR10QQsamotorscategorymapZ6000QQsacategoryZ6000Q26 catrefQ3DC6QQsotrZ2QQcoactionZcompareQQcopagenumZ1 QQcoentrypageZsearch)

I swear at times, we get "paint thinner" for gas b/c it sure doesn't smell like unleaded!!

Heck, for all I know, the stuff might just be VM&P Naphtha?????

And I know what Gasohol, Toluene, MEK and Acetone smells like too...

Kinda always happens around the change of the fuel mixtures at the start and end of the Ozone season here in the midwest b/c of St. Louis having an Ozone problem sorta deal...

Well, pdq I did it to myself. I calculated a DCR of around 8.4 and by having to trim both block and heads, and scooting the cam ++, it's my fault.

Oh well. Now to find something cheaper than $100!

THNX guys.

Oh PDQ, that dang toluene makes the exhuast VERY aromatic btw. Kind of sweet smelling stuff. And I don't want any in the tank over winter storage. It's likely hard on rubber/plastic and it's even more "aromatic" at rest in the garage.

I have one that works with a standard ignition MSD..it might work with a 6al..but its made for an HEI..30 bucks plus the ride if you can use it

smile.gif Actually did a little "timing by ear" and have yet to take a light to it. Figured I pulled out 4-5 degrees, cutting ini to 13 and tot to 32.

Darn thing runs a bit better at low speed? I'll take it for now!

Taking away timing will make your exhaust valve/head hotter.

And hot spots are not good.

Waterinjection is a better way. If you drive alot its not very fun always using toulene.
