Trying to find original painted steel valve covers for my '71 LS5. They're all generally the same as far as breather holes and oil fill but that's where the similarities end. Many different tabs and wire clips, some have push in type oil fill some are notched for the screw type and so on. This is not a concours car but I'd like to get close to original. It's a late build (7/71) car if that matters.

I think you may need to look at a supplier like Crane's Corvertte or Paragon Corvette to get a real nice set of repro covers, but be prepared to pay $$$.

Personally, I think a set of the repops like those offered by Ground Up would look nice without breaking the bank, and most guys won't be able to tell. You could also run them temporarily if you wish and put the " Really nice set " on your list of long term goals for the car. This way you can get the car looking closer to how you would like more quickly, and tweak it as you go along.

The Corvette covers will probably have the notch for the brake booster.
I would take a pair of repo chrome covers and sand blast/paint them

Mike, with both of our 71's being original big block cars, would they have had the same type of valve covers? I wouldn't mind tracking down an original set for mine as well.

Yea Shawn they should be the same as they came painted and not chrome also. There's a lot of original ones on e-bay right now but like I said they're all different as far as tabs and loom clips and fill holes!

I just bought some! Those weren't on there last night when I bid on some other ones! My luck. Oh well, the ones I bought look the same so I should be OK. I guess the push-in style oil fill is correct then?

Good find Mike, if you come across another set let me know. If I can find a clean unrusted pair that needs just paint for $50 or so I really like to get a set. I'll keep my eyes peeled on ebay
