: Transmission Suggestions
billyb70canada Dec 8th, 04, 8:18 PM Have BB in 70 Chevelle and transmission (M20) is in need of rebuild or replacement. Runs 13.82 at 102, and is a mainly street car. Am looking at a Tremec 600 or M22 (new). The TKO 600 seems to range from $1700 to $3000. Options like having the shifter in the correct position is around $300. New drive shaft is about $400, etc.etc. etc. New Muncie is around $1850 and needs almost nothing except maybe a new shifter. The Tremec is .64 overdrive so that would be nice for longer trips. Any thoughts or best places to purchase. How was the install for the Tremec.
EddieC67ss Dec 8th, 04, 8:28 PM What is the rear ratio? Richmond 5 speed is less cutting. The problem is a Richmond is not an overdrive transmission. With a set of 3:08 rear gears the multiplication factor is the same as if you had a set of 4:56's.
Grandpa's SS Dec 10th, 04, 1:32 AM BillyB70Canada,
I put in the Tremec TKO-600 and was a lot less money than you think. Remember with the muncie, or the Richmond you still need to purchase the shifter mechanism. The Richmond 5 speed shifter will run you an extra $400.00, the muncie for a decent Hurst $250.00
The TKO has the shifter all internal, so no additional cost, just bolt on a stick and ball and fly.
Also, my Tremec has a 2 3/4" throw from 1st to 2nd, really small gate, shift pattern is faster than a C5 Corvette.
I am in Surrey BC if your close by.

You may want to wander into the Transmissions forum and do a search on the up-coming Muncie 5 speed from Autogear. It's supposed to be strong (er), have an overdrive, and be a true bolt in for something in the neighborhood of 2500 with a shifter, give or take.
Seems about the only thing not known about this trans is when it will be available.

Grandpa's SS Dec 11th, 04, 12:59 AM Rapid Robert,
I agree, the Tremec is not paticularly the transmission I would pick for 100% racing, and in my case by the time I was done it was about $2,400.00 installed, not a cheap transmission choice, but I believe the best 5 speed on the market.
It's also darn tricky to launch with a 2.87 1st gear, even with 10.9" wide tires.
But I can drive home in 5th 65MPH at 2,100RPM.

Trick Question: If someone cleared the traps at 129MPH in 4th gear 1:1 at 6,300 RPM, what make shifter ball does he have on his transmission?
Just kidding, my car is mainly show-n-go, with 8,000 miles a year. I have taken many 1st's, and have yet to hear a goup of guys walk up to a show car and say.
" WOW, its got an automatic too"
RapidRobert, I do agree, if I was racing 100%, it would be automatic for me as well, but I'm an old sailor, and love to row.
Bob West Dec 11th, 04, 1:34 AM I've had 3 cars with 4 speeds, I love to row the gears, drove a truck full time for 15 years, and still do occasionally, probably grabbed more gears than most on this sight,,,but I love drag racing too. 4 speeds don't take to drag racing well and expensive to repair anymore. I can manually shift the automatic though,,,its almost just as good :D
OUChevelleSS Dec 11th, 04, 2:41 AM Last I heard the Muncie 5-speed was going to be availabe this spring.
Scott_68_SS Dec 11th, 04, 4:53 AM The Richmond 6spd is about $2900 w/shifter but fits a little better. The TKO wasn't available when I bought mine. But a Summit 10% discount was :D
I'd probably go with the TKO now since it's a little cheaper. May eventually get one for the Camaro. But I have 4 T400's so ;)
