Hi, I have been trying to put back together a 1987 El Camino that some one else started on. It has a 305 v8 with headers and a Eldenbrock Manifold. The guy who started this project was not a very good mechanic and I am trying to fix his poor workmanship. The problem I am having now is the dip stick was removed to install the headers. My question is what do I need to do to install the dip stick. Do I need a special dip stick tube? The old one is missing and it looks like it was cut off at the block. Can I get a stock tube and modify it? Thanks, Ron

welcome..
the first thing you need to do is make sure that all of the old tube is out of the block. then, it's just a matter of getting a different tube and shoving it in the hole- i think new tubes and dipsticks are still available from GM for not too much $$$- maybe with a small bit of black silicone smeared on the part of the tube that goes into the block for a little extra leakage protection.
is it the original engine? what side is the dipstick hole on your block? if it's on the passenger side, then order a dipstick for your car.. if it's on the driver's side, then order one for a mid 70's Chvelle.

My 78 had a block mount tube, and I used an aftermarket chrome one in it' s place. It had no problem clearing the headers.
