: 5 Speed (TKO) Almost Done
00WS6TA Mar 28th, 08, 7:36 PM Geezzz, what a job. Thanks to my PACC/TC buddies Sean (PickSS) Rick - aka Master Fabricator (ricks_67), Joe (Malibu400), Dave (BLN) and Chad (csmnlm).
I could NOT have done this without the help and support from some of the best guys on the planet. :)
I am almost done, still need to get the driveshaft shortened and get the interior in as well as some other lose ends. This is a going to be a great summer guys!
69-CHVL Mar 28th, 08, 7:51 PM Cool! Just remember to take note of the moment when you shift into 5th for the first time.
BTW - did you get a price for shortening the d-shaft? Local shop here told my buddy 200.00, which I thought was alot considering you can get a new one for 300.00.

Vince, I am going to look into that Monday. The shop right up the street does this and they used my car on their Web site (http://gardenspotframe.com/drive.htm), so they said they would "take care of me." :)
$200.00 does sound like a lot. Oh....and I'll note the first 5th gear change. :)
gibbons Mar 28th, 08, 10:03 PM I've been dinking around with mine for 3 months. But I pulled the engine and did some work on it too. It's funny, it started with a 5 speed kit, and quickly spread to a Quicktime scatter sheild, very pricey McLeod RST twin disc clutch, billet flywheel, March serpentine system with new water pump and PS pump, BG Mighty Demon, new Pypes Violator muffs, upgraded 1350 aluminum drive shaft with new pinion yoke, Spal twin fan set up, recoating my headers, Milodon oil pan, urethane motor mounts, blah blah blah. I had to bite my tongue today to keep from buying an aluminum radiator. I am lucky to have an understanding wife.
I sorta need new tires, I am sure I will shortly with a manual instead of auto

I just had mine done, shortened, balanced, and they cleaned and painted it for $85.00
I also had to buy a 32 spline yoke which was $90.00
All from a welding shop here in town.

I hear ya Gibbons, I went with a SFI flywheel and a blowproof as well. I installed a aluminum radiator when I did my engine two years ago, pretty much had too, blown engines tend to generate heat.
69 Daytona Yellow 3 Speed Mar 29th, 08, 12:32 AM Ok everybody i cought Spider Dan doing some late night testing. He didnt know i put the video camera in the car. He said he was just going around the block to get a six pack. Well tell me what ya think.....

00WS6TA Mar 29th, 08, 8:40 AM Darn Tony, I really thought by going out at 3am my cover wouldn't be exposed. :D
I only wished I shift that good....right guys?
madmax66 Mar 29th, 08, 12:26 PM Just finished mine this week, It is sooo much better, even 1st through 4th is more fun than the 4 speed Saginaw that was in my car. Had the drive shaft shortened, cleaned , painted, balanced and u-joints presseed out and replaced with new yoke cost was $65.00. Take it to a Truck Repair place they are much cheaper. Dropped it off one day picked it up the next.

mr 4 speed Mar 29th, 08, 9:33 PM Dan,that is a great conversion..nothing like an overdrive in a stick musclecar!

Thanks I am excited Chris, almost there. Few more odds and ends.
bdc1013 Mar 31st, 08, 2:07 AM it sure is fun... i get a grin on my face every time
gibbons Mar 31st, 08, 10:11 AM Well, I ordered my aluminum radiator today, I just don't feel like monkeying around with my old one which looks like a Harrison, but has the wrong hat section on top so the fan brackets dont fit. No shifting grins from me yet...
Hey, how about those new tools to do this conversion: Engine lifter/tilter, TDC finder plug, digital protractor/level, muffler joint separator jacks, different dial indicator, several taps, new tank of argon, motor stand.... I already had all the other tools, and borrowed an engine hoist. Yeah, I got carried away with this and did a bunch of other stuff which doubled the cost of my project. I won't count my new 4 post lift in the project, as it came 14 weeks after I ordered it and the part of the job when I really needed it is past.

Glad to hear it's coming along, Dan. Can't wait to see the finished product.
Brettd85 Mar 31st, 08, 12:34 PM Gibbons, it is really all worth the trouble. My TKO project started as a budget as well, I sure dont regret it now!

Hey Brett, if it wasn't for the guys at Classic Chevy 5 Speed and the this site, I might have detonated. As is, I am getting pretty excited. And I have learned a lot. I shouldn't admit this, but I stacked a couple of Subaru brake rotor boxes inside to sit on and played like I was rowing the gears  I can't wait!

kboorman Mar 31st, 08, 3:37 PM You going to make some events this year?
Yeah, I knew that was coming. ;)
Can't wait for the next get together. Had some bad timing last summer but now we're settled in to the new place so no more excuses. I want to get the Chevelle out one more time before I pull her in for the rebuild.

But it fits so good Sean. :)
00WS6TA Apr 3rd, 08, 8:28 AM Getting my new drive shaft this Friday :) Of course they are calling for rain this weekend :(
Looks like I might be plowing through the gears in the garage after all. :D
bdc1013 Apr 3rd, 08, 11:07 AM it'll give you time to double check everything. plus you still have to do the on jack stands break-in. They call for like 15 to 20 minutes of going through the gears. so that should give you a little grin, the only problem is you wont be moving and there wont be smoke comming from your tires.
scuddy Apr 3rd, 08, 3:58 PM seeing that power shifting video put me over the edge.i ordered the swap kit from classic chevy and am awaiting arrival in 5 more days.
(it will take longer)
had to tell somebody as i cant tell my wife.
paul
bdc1013 Apr 4th, 08, 12:32 AM haha very nice. its straight forward swap. nothing technical unless you're going with hydraulic stuff and doing it with an LS motor but the tranny is a nice hunk of artwork

Paul,
Your secret is safe with me! Don't worry about it, she'll never notice you grabbing 5th. :)
00WS6TA Apr 5th, 08, 8:45 AM And yet a little closer. Should keep the heat out (not a fan of heat) and reduce the sound a bit, ok, not so much on the sound. :)
