Has anyone installed a Hypercoil 5 dia 11 inch length coil into any 70 to 72 Chevelles/El Camino?

I just purchased/received the rear hypercoils (#175 ) and test mounted them this evening.

The hypercoils do not have pig tail ends, which creates an issue.

The lower perch, landing face (on a 10 bolt rear end axle) that supports the coil is too small to support the 5 inch coil face.

A similar situation occurs at the top of the spring/bottom of the underbody. The underbody "metal nub/bulb that keeps the spring in place is smallish.

Do people use the spring spacers (speedway-like) to transform the small perch landing into a larger landing for the spring?

thanks.

The correct springs have a pig tail on one end. You may be able to make them work with spacers or something.

mine has a single pigtail. I installed the pigtail down, open end up and didn't have any issues. I added a set of coil pads from a late model F-body to the top later and that works fine too.

You need the 5.5" x 11" with the pigtail at one end. P/N 44411-175 with the late model GM F - Body spring pads for the top of the spring. GM P/N 10290379 http://www.speedwaymotors.com/p/5878,154_11andquot;-Hyperco-Street-Stock-5-1and2andquot;-OD-Rear-Coil-Springs.html

So do they come red, or black like in the speedway link?

Thanks all.

I couldn't pass up two used hypercoils for $30. Looks like I have to fab something up.

Mike, thanks for picture...especially the upper body spring pads. I will get those from Speedway.

You could try something like this:

Maybe cut the perch off and adapt it to your car. They work with the 5" springs.

The upper pads are not necessary-- but may be used to adjust final ride height.

Personally, I like the way the cars sit with the 5 x 11" single pigtails with no spacers/isolators on the top... but it may be too low for some.

Troy,

I really like how your car sits. Very nice. BTW, I read through some of your responses re. the Afco 1020 and 1031s. That thread is why I bought the Afcos...great price/great shock for being on a budget. I purchased the Hypercoils on Ebay (fronts 800# and rears 175#). I purchased the tall spacers from Speedway.

This afternoon I test fit the 5 by 11 springs in the rear without spacers. I am running 17 by 11 rims with 315s, and this only leaves about 1/8 inch clearance between side of tire and inside fender lip. Sure look bad a**, but that is a no go. (I do haul things in the Elky, not a trailer queen).

I then removed the spring and reinstalled spring and the tall speedway spacer (no cuts yet). I put the spacer at the top. Not bad, but I think I will trim away 1/2 inch of the spacer, reinstall, and see how it looks.
