rubadub Mar 27th, 08, 6:20 PM I know the 70's are more desireable then the 68's, but the prices are down, I wonder how much the new challenger and the camaro will effect this.
Theres a chance these cars may never go real high again. It's a different ballgame then what it was 2 1/2 years ago, the best bet for investment might be a quality clone over a matching number.
Rob
Rob- Thank you for the B-J link, I forgot that already started. The big $$$ will be bid Friday night and Saturday; but I think you are right! Down from 2 or 3 years ago. Maybe a good time to buy, I'm looking!!
704EVER Mar 27th, 08, 6:37 PM It's hard to tell with either of these cars what their true condition is by the pictures. The 68 doesn't look that great under the hood, so I can't imagine the rest looked all that great in person either. Thursday is usually the lower end cars going across, so I'm not all that surprised at the numbers. A fathom blue 70, that I didn't think would fetch 25K brought 36K last month on a Saturday at RM down here. I realize the market is down and there is a smaller pool of buyers, but I still believe the quality restored cars will hold their own. I'm going to Barrett Friday afternoon, Russo tommorrow night and Barrett on Saturday. Should be a good weekend.
rubadub Mar 27th, 08, 6:41 PM Your welcome Fred.
Its hard to say whats going on, but theres a few things to look at.
The cars we have are around fourty years old, and the baby boomers might be one of the reasons things have changed. A lot of them have the money to get a car, but they want to drive it, and wether its a matching number or a clone, they are not sure what there getting.
Lets say the challenger and camaro go for around $40,000, they start selling a few, then ford will step up there advertising on the mustang.
A person can get a new muscle car with a warranty for 40k, he can get it in and drive it any where he wants to, its hard to say how this is all going to wash out.
Rob
DougA Mar 27th, 08, 6:54 PM That Monte looks like a good buy,but like you said you can't really tell unless you see it in person.
Enforcer505 Mar 28th, 08, 1:18 AM yeah i have been to B-J and let me tell you, there not all great and quality built cars. tv hides alot of imperfections same with pics say on ebay. i have noticed also a drop in attendance there over the years. i saw a great looking 64" corvette there and only got 40k recently . so you know the prices are dropping steady....
LateNight72 Mar 28th, 08, 2:32 AM There seems to be alot of good buys, now.
mr 4 speed Mar 28th, 08, 6:50 AM Saw a nice gold 69 Yenko Tribute go for (I believe) $39,500 last night on B-J
Looked like a well done car (at least on TV)
huffhuff Mar 28th, 08, 10:49 AM size of crowd on first days are smaller than on the weekends. i wouldn't want my car to sell early.
704EVER Mar 28th, 08, 5:11 PM Prices are up on day 2. Two nice 70's went 53K and 50K so maybe it's not all that bad afterall.

quikss Mar 28th, 08, 5:52 PM you know why they are down dont you -gas prices are going up-
I completely disagree with that thought.
Anybody that is going to Barrett -Jackson to buy a car is not worried about what kind of mileage it gets. Heck I doubt very few of us that own these cars and drive them regularly worry about gas for their chevelle. My daily driver? Sure gas prices affect me, My toy? Hell no.
Jeff
rubadub Mar 28th, 08, 5:53 PM you know why they are down dont you -gas prices are going up-
No doubt on that, why have it if you can't drive it, by the time I get mine done, gas will probably be double what it is now.
Lets see here, you drive 60 mph at 10 miles to the gallon, how much is that per hour.
Thats the way were going to have to look at it, dollars per hour.
The days of just jumping in the car and cruising around, thats a thing of the past, unless a guy has a fat wallet.
When you have one of these cars, wether your working on it or driving it, when you get up in the morning, its like somebody just frisks you for all your money.:)

Here are all the Chevelles and El Camino's at the auction. Prices include 10% buyers fee.
Top seller as of Friday was the 66 Convertible but there are some very nice and rare cars selling on Saturday especially Lot # 660 1965 Z16. Prices seam about right. Most numbers matching BB are going for around 50K with convertibles slightly higher. Lot # 656.1 should go high because of the documented rotisserie restoration and #672 should be the top seller as it is a 1 owner original 454.
skyman51 Mar 29th, 08, 9:38 AM I know I am a broken record, but I have to disagree with most of the pundits. From what I have seen prices are strong for REAL documented cars. Pro streets, mods, tributes, clones or whatever can be bought cheap. When I see Pro Team buy a what was retail last year that tells me prices for quality cars are still rising.
oldtimebaseballfan Mar 29th, 08, 4:03 PM Z-16 went for $177,000. That is not a strong price for a beautiful Z-16.
dmg1029 Mar 29th, 08, 4:09 PM Seems more like the Barrett 'ford' Jackson auction
oldtimebaseballfan Mar 29th, 08, 4:50 PM Lot #673 LS6 Chevelle sold for 82k.
Brettd85 Mar 29th, 08, 5:02 PM This is BJ in palm beach correct? Prices seem to be much much lower than the BJ AZ auctions. Anyone else notice that?

The original matching numbered cars do have value, but that depends on what shape there in. A really nice matching number car is going to increase in value, but theres not that many really, really nice ones out there.
They have a lift at BJ so I guess for a fee you can look at the underside of a car. For example, where the floor supports and floor pans are spot welded.
If you take a close look at just this area, its hard to see the rust under there, I know this, because when I sandblasted my floor pans, I thought, what is this, it kind of looks like rust, but its pretty hard to tell, so I get inside the car, and I can see where the rust actually raised up the metal between the spot welds.
I cut out a piece and it was a good 3/16'' of an inch of shale type rust.
If a guy fimds rust there, then you know the deal on the rest of the underside, but its 40 years old.
The cars you have sound like really nice cars, and if they are they will increase in value.
If a person is going to buy a 40 year old car, he needs to look it over really good.

Agree 100%.. The REALLY NICE cars will always hold their value IMO. But even those cars deserve a looksie by someone who knows what they are looking at!
mr 4 speed Mar 29th, 08, 6:03 PM lot #366 was a matching numbers LS5..went for 50K
Hopefully it was as nice in person as it looked on TV
I don't see any records being set for Chevelle sales at this event although the 66 SS396 convertible did well at 107K and it had a 2 speed auto
Malitude Mar 29th, 08, 6:20 PM This is BJ in palm beach correct? Prices seem to be much much lower than the BJ AZ auctions. Anyone else notice that?
I've noticed the same thing. Not as many people either. Definetly the wrong crowd for GM muscle. Lots of foreign cars going for big bucks though.
Don_Lightfoot Mar 29th, 08, 6:34 PM I watched the majority of the auction Saturday afternoon. Same old story of "going to commercial" for most of the Camaros and Chevelles I wanted to see. Not much you can do about that I guess. Seems like they should change the name from "BJ Auction" to "Mustang & Corvette Show". I'm sure I saw every one of those models go across the block.
Man, the Musclecar convertibles sure brought some very stong money in my opinion. The 66 SS Chevelle powerglide, the 442 and the Buick GS all went for over $100K I think. Unfortunately I did not see any of those three go across, whether it was commercials or I was away from the TV. From a Chevelle standpoint, it appears to me that prices are about where they have been over the past nine months or so.
In general, I would say some cars brought more than I would have expected, while others brought less
SS4Real Mar 29th, 08, 7:13 PM Looks like Albert's former '70 LS5 was bid to $72,600 on ebay a few days ago so the right cars and venues are still bringing strong bids.
704EVER Mar 29th, 08, 9:08 PM Lot #673 LS6 Chevelle sold for 82k.
I wouldn't even call this car an LS6. Just about everything under the hood was wrong and I only had around 10 minutes or so to look at it before it went on the block. The White/Black/Red combo left a little to be desired as well. All is not what it's cracked up to be in BJ world unless your there to see it for yourself.
704EVER Mar 29th, 08, 9:10 PM This is BJ in palm beach correct? Prices seem to be much much lower than the BJ AZ auctions. Anyone else notice that?
I think I can answer that for you in three words " West Coast Money"!!!
ohhawk Mar 29th, 08, 9:40 PM The Scottsdale auction has always been the main event with national exposure from The Speed Channel and other major media for several years. It is no surprise that the FL event takes a runner-up position. Numerous auctions have now sprouted up around the BJ event in AZ during the same time period as it is the grandfather of all.
As far as prices, there is nothing to indicate the sky is falling with cars with the two C's... condition and collectability. Certainly the general market is down from the 2006 highs but 2008 auctions still show prices holding pretty strong. There are always exceptions that can be touted. Each auction has its bargin buys and its questionable sells. 2006 prices simply showed some irrational exhuberance and now they're returning to a bit more reasonable levels but still pretty strong for the good cars.
Colin Comer, a respected enthusiast and dealer, has a nice recap on pricing in the most recent issue of Sports Car Market that is good reading. He also attended 6 of the early '08 auctions in AZ and viewed lots of the cars and auction action. The general tone of the article was that he was going to AZ expecting a fair degree of concern about falling prices but was surprised by the strength the market showed.
No one can predict what the future will bring with these cars but the fact that prices are holding pretty strong with a good headwind going in our economy I would think is a good sign.
P.S. The RM auction in FL a few weeks ago showed a few Chevelles with some strong numbers. One LS6 for over $180,000 and a 70 droptop 396 for over $110,000.
Brettd85 Mar 29th, 08, 9:54 PM I think I can answer that for you in three words " West Coast Money"!!!
I'm not sure thats why though.. People from all over the US and world go to the auctions. I think Malitude got it right, just less people. When you say BJ people think of the auctions in AZ. The palm beach is just a secondary auction nowhere near as large as the AZ one right?
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Mar 29th, 08, 10:33 PM I'm watching the LIVE coverage of INDY mecum auction now.. all Muscle cars and good coverage!!
Shevelle Mar 29th, 08, 10:34 PM I'm anxious to see how the new venue in Las Vegas goes. I would think it to attract more buyers than Palm Beach, less than Scottsdale because everyone is used to the January auction. I wonder how the Vegas SEMA show the following week will effect it. People that attend SEMA may have a hard time being off for two weeks.

Wife38 Apr 2nd, 08, 6:38 PM Lot # 656.1, was my car ,black 1966 chevelle convertible ,I was disapointed at 107,000. Thought it would bring more,They seem to thing florida was down about 30%. But the real nice stuff was at the Russ and Steel sale because of the No Reserve, The highest car was around 180.000 at Barrett, but in scotsdale 3 million, so the shows are considerably different in the quality, After being in florida around this auction there were alot of upset sellers with NO RESERVE and 10 pecent commision, I Feel I got the most I could get in this sale considering It was in the Top Ten of the Sale, Maybe know someone out there might learn from this that weather its got a 4 speed or automatic a quality car will bring alot of money,So for all those out there who doughted my car when it was on ebay, The proof is in the pudding, A 1966 chevelle ss convertible no matter what its equipment is, can do good also, Two speed powerglide outselling all 4 speeds WOW, Gotta be something,
