850 is just fine on your 454...........been running them for years on 396 bbc even on the street and the 850 on my 396 ALWAYS out performed my other 750 and 600 carbs that i kept around just for that purpose.........e.t. and mph tell me which one is the best and so far over the years the 850 has been on top...... some might say you might get better street matters out of a smaller carb.......but for me if it e.t.'s and makes more mph then thats the carb thats going to stay on there...........

even right now on my 396 bbc in my 2.41 geared z28 im running a single plane intake and 750 carb on top of that it has been modified to flow more then just 750 cfm's and that combo out performed the stock cast iron intake and my other 600 carb..........lol e.t. and mph you can not argue with........

stick with the carb and get it dialed in.....and enjoy........

Go to Holley's web site. There's a formula for it. If I remember right, it comes out to about 770. Depends what you want it to run like of course.

750 vacuum secondary is also a very good choice..
just be sure to get the secondary spring kit,and use either one of the 2 lightest springs.

I sure like my Holley 950HP,a little pricey but you can't argue with performance.

As for me and my 454 with a very mild cam, I really enjoy the 850 at the track but the 750 just seems to get better MPG. I wonder if anyone is running a 750 DP? I also switched to a 50cc squirter and saw a big dif in response.

As Honest Charlie used ta say, a 3310-1 Holley setup right is the runninest carb. ever!!!

I know, it's been years since he was around but for a good street motor I think his thoughts on it are still fine today!!

Jmho..
