I posted this in "Performance", just figured I'd post here too to get more (any) opinions...

Looking for some opinions on the Edelbrock AVS carbs.

I have currently have a "new-in-box" Edelbrock 750 cfm that I was going to install... I can return it to Summit and get an 800 cfm AVS for about $125-$150 more (I have had the 750 sitting for about 10 months, so I'd lose a 10% restocking fee)...

Basically, is the extra 50 cfm rating going to do much? I figured it wouldn't be significant.

Is the AVS a good idea (a search yielded little, but some mention of secondary boosters?).

My Combo: 427 Small Block; AFR 195 heads; hyd flat cam, ~274 duration; going to be running an HEI, but with a CD box; Currently 3.70 gears (may be going to 3.25 or 3.00s); TH400 automatic...

Looking for more of a cruiser. I can swap carbs, etc if I really want to squeeze the last bit of power out of it, but right now, lifes too busy for that.

Currently has a Demon DP.

I have an 800 AVS. After jet changes, it worked GREAT on my 427 BBC in the RatVette.
The AVS is a good feature to tune-in the secondary opening. I have the carb off the Vette for the time being...needs an idle passage cleared. Thinking this is gonna go on my 463" Rat for the Elky.

Eddy runs it on their spiffier crate SBCs:

So, you think its worth it over the standard Performer?

I am probably going to get it, just looking for some insite...

Thanks

I'd consider the AVS feature an improvement over the other units.
Eddy runs the Thunder 650 AVS on their less powerful engines.
I figure they consider this a good thing too.

There might be 3-4 other guys that reply on Eddy carb threads.

Yeah, I am waiting for all those "Holley" guys to try and change my mind... I have had great experiences with the Edelbrock carbs, but I haven't heard much about the AVS versions...

Thanks again...

Something that always bugged me was the lack of specifications on the larger carb sizes. Edelbrock publishes throttle bore sizes for everything else... why not the 800's too?

After playing around with the 600 and 750 AFB versions on my little 402 I am not sure you will gain too much with the 800. Shoot you could probably gain as much or more out of the 750 just by doing a booster port. I am actually having better luck with the little 600 running my ported boosters from the 750. Not quite as much stumble. Better fuel draw on top.

I would NEVER tell you to switch to Holley though, but I WOULD tell you to switch to EFI. :beers:

EFI would be nice... But, I'm trying hard to keep my "limited Budget" project from snowballing... :D

I got my HEI partially installed, so maybe I'll try to pick up the Edelbrock carb this week, rather than bolt the Demon back on... Although, I set up the fuel line so I could run either carb. maybe I'll swap them out at the TnT and see what happens...

The previous distrib was mechanical advance only... I was going to swap for a vacuum advance version of the same distrib, but realized I had this brand new Summit HEI just sitting... I also have a Summit CD ignition box to install...

Its my wife's Birthday today, so I am trying to avoid ordering anything for the car today. ;)
Thats okay, because Summit stuff usually arrives the day after ordering...

Really, I like Holleys, but the Edelbrocks just seem so much better for a cruiser, and I never saw a huge drop in performance using them... In all honesty, Much of the reason I bought the Edel750 was the low cost for a "Brand New" 750 carb I could bolt on and go (I have a 780 Holley that needs rebuilding, but just didn't have the time to fool with the rebuild back when I bought the Edel 750)...

Any thing is better than the H word. I myself like the Qjet, and for you I would use the 800 cfm version off a caddy, it is way easier to get the jetting and pump shot right and it will bust harder that the H version.

I have an Eddy 800 CFM Thunder. Engine dyno run on my 496 pulled a max 780 CFM. Several folks I trust here said I left about 10-25 hp on the dyno with this carb. I bought it for the street manners. I have had good luck with them and this one has more tune-ability. It will be okay for now. Desktop Dyno says more CFM will yield more power with my setup. I will step up to more cam before I swap to a Holley.

If you want street-ability and won't miss the top end loss, go with the Edelbrock. If you are looking for a top end performance, go somewhere else.

My $.02.

Eric, pretty much my reasoning...

The purpose of this car is not to maximize output, but to maximize driveability (which includes mileage etc)... I honestly don't really care if I lost 5%-10% of Peak power... I will rarely be at peak power (or at least where I will notice a difference)...

Wally, Q-jet a no-go for this project. I already have the Edelbrock carb, and the intake is a square-flange... But I see alot fo people getting respectable performance out of the Q-jet...

I ran an EDL performer 750 and 800cfm on my 496. I wasn't able to tell a difference between carbs as far as power.

Great carbs for the street if you just want to install it and go.

I'm now running a Holley 850 Vacuum secondary off a 502. Very smooth idle and runs great.

I have an EDL performer 800 for sale if your interested. It only has about 1,500miles on it. It has a slight hesitation at idle when you step on it.

Thanks for the offer,

But I already have a new 750... I can return it for credit in exchange for the 800 if I decide to go that route (probably order that today)...
