: mounting fuel cell up front......restrictions?
ddeennis Dec 19th, 04, 8:56 PM ok im at the point on my 81 camaro to mount a fuel cell......i took the rear mounted 16 gallon fuel cell out and redone the trunk floor.
i'm wanting to mount a small fuel cell (2 gallons give or take). im wanting to mount the fuel cell in the pass. side front corner. mount it on the radiator support member. now im not sure if this is legel or not but want to know.
i have my tunnel ram plumbed to the fuel regulator now.
i was going to run alum. line from the fuel regulator (which is mounted on the pass side of the two carbs dead smack in the middle, made a bracket to hold it and used the corner studs of the carbs to hold it)
i was going to run the alum. line down the front of the block (kinda like stock location) and over to the inside frame and up and over the frame to the fuel cell. somewhere in the middle of that i was going to mount my holley fuel pump and filter.
so who can help out here.
sandmann120 Dec 19th, 04, 9:49 PM Be careful about using solid aluminum line, evn with motor plates. Things can really flex. As far as mounting the fuel cell up front, it shouldn't be a problem, as that is where I have seen a few Pro Stock and Pro Mod cars mount theirs. Look in an NHRA or IHRA rulebook to see if they have any restrictions on it. If you don't have one, let me know and I'll look when I get home from work.
ddeennis Dec 19th, 04, 9:55 PM i dont have one......the last one i had was from 95 and not sure were its at. so i thought i would ask here.
not sure on the alum line thing i have had that alum line on my car for 11 years running ......i was never aware that there could be problems.....it must be a better grade....lol......
sandmann120 Dec 19th, 04, 10:18 PM It's just something to keep an eye on. We've run into problems with it before on our digger. Anyway, I'll look it up when I get home. If I remember right, they stipulate the brackets, etc, but I'm reasonably sure it isn't too big of a deal.
66rat Dec 20th, 04, 3:49 AM FWIW, My 79 Camaro has a 3 gallon cell mounted in front of the radiator. There is plenty of room in front of the radiator, but you will have to weld in a loop to encase it within the frame to be legal.

anyone else have info on the fuel cell rules for up front.......thanks ahead of time
1968 hot rod Dec 21st, 04, 12:17 AM ddennis,
its legal if you mount it on the inside of the rad support,at least I never got pinched by tech if it wasn't.
If you put it in front your gonna have to make a loop as suggested.
1 suggestion if your running the small holley reg,run 1 per carb.
Cable Dec 21st, 04, 1:35 AM I used to run a 2 gallon cell up front with C-16 gas in for my nitrous fuel line. Never had any problems with tech.
ddeennis Dec 21st, 04, 9:47 PM the loop ?????/not sure what your saying here.......i'm just assuming you mean a cover plate to cover the fuel cell.....???????i guess if i havent seen it yet its hard to see it in my mind........how thick? can i just screw the cover to the radiator support.....????
im running the same fuel regulator i did with my nitrous set up.....single in dual out(one side feed the carb and the other the nitrous plate).....im just feeding the carbs from each sidenow.....i figure if it was good enough for my 10's on the bottle it should work for the tunnel ram.......not sure what is thought of as small i guess..........
thanks for the replys guys keep them comming.........any rules on where i can mount the fuel pump...its a holley pump......blue series....now im not sure if its enough to feed the motor but its what i have to go with right now......im running my 1/2" fuel line from the tank to the pump and to the filter and to the regulator........after that its the 3/8" line.
i use to use the holley blue as the nitrous back up pump.....anytime i was on the juice it was on to feed the line more......otherwise i just ran on the mechanical holley strip pump....
66rat Dec 22nd, 04, 3:53 AM Sorry I don't have a digital camera, but I know someone who is getting one for Christmas :D The loop in question goes from frame horn to frame horn. I just squared off the end of the frame horns and welded a plate over the end, then bent a loop that goes out in front of the fuel cell and welded it to the plates. Hope that explains it, I know a picture is worth a thousand words, but that will have to wait till after Christmas.
