I have a '67 chevelle 136 mocked up as an SS with a date correct 396 350 hp, M21 4 spd, a/c, and Holly carb. I have yet to discern the model and cfm. I would like to change to an edelbrock thunder AVS 650 for ease of use (I know nothing about cars), and I have little inclination to race. I believe the manifold is stock or OEM. Other than the carb and included gasket, what else do I need to finsih the job? Do I use a single or double fuel line kit? Thanks for any help, and please forgive my ignorance.

Charlie,

Welcome to Team Chevelle! I see this is your first post.
I have a 800 Eddy and I use the extended single feed line....makes my connection right where the Holley carb fuel line would end.
You will need to read the tuning instructions that come with the Carb and you will probably need a jetting kit.

Thanks, George
Going through the forum, it looks like I should be using an 800 thunder series or a 750 performer. I had feared the 800 to be too big for the engine. What is the advantage of the double fuel line, and what is a jetting kit. Again, sorry for the ignorance.

Well Charlie,
It is like this.
Unlike cereal that come usually perfect out of the box....
Carbs come with generic calibration right out of the box. So, you may have to make some adjustments to the tuning of your new carb. This will certainly mean adjusting the idle speed and adjusting the idle mixture screw for each side of the carb. Often you may have to go up or down on the jetting in order to get the fuel-air mixture right.

Read this:

Best if you team-up with someone familiar with your carb choice in the greater Indianapolis area to assist. But reading-up ahead and tinkering by yourself are empowerment tools. I just wouldn't recommend jumping into this if this is something you rely on for transportation.

Another carb option is to send the info off the air horn on your Holley, List 3310-2 or something like that off your carb so I can figure out what you have. Found on the front of the air horn/choke tower. This carb you have could already be perfect for your car....send ALL the numbers off the carb.
You could have a GM Holley carb.
Pics for lack of a good description always work. Pics have to be on some website already, you cannot upload directly off your computer.

Another option is to have a carb made specifically for your application by Sean Murphy or one of several other companies.

Remember, you also need to integrate your ignition curve into your carb tuning.

You say little to no strip use, 396/350...what cam?
What is your ignition curve?

. I believe the manifold is stock or OEM. .
Sorry to confuse you even more but, If that's the case, it's (likely) a "speadbore" intake
(small primaries, large secondaries) most holley and edelborock carbs are "square bore" (same size)
If it's a cast iron intake ? You may want to check you have an adapter plate ?
Or if you have a speadbore holley ? (unlikely) you may want to consider a "quadrajet" that will bolt straight on

Buy a 750 cfm Edelbrock Performer Series. It comes with a dvd that tells you everything you need to know to install and tune your carb.

I put an Edelbrock AVS 650 on my mild 461 and it works great. It's just the right size for the engine and is used only on the street. Edelbrock Performer carbs have a reputation for a bog, but the AVS has adjustable secondaries which solves that problem. The AVS 800 might be too big -- if you're using it strictly for street, I'd go with the 650. Better low-end torque and gas mileage, and it still pulls hard at higher rpm's.

George and all,
Thanks so much for the help. I'll get those numbers to you in a bit.

Charlie,

I live in New Palestine and currently building a 70ss. Just purchased an engine (468 bbc) from Steve Schmidt racing on w. 30th off of Post road. They also have a auto repair shop and I would suggest calling Tyler at 317.897.2995. He can set up your carb at a very reasonable price and he is the best when it comes to muscle cars. He built most of my 68 Camaro (555 Dart BBC, 700hp). Tell him Eric sent you!
