: Next Step
shadowgray396 Mar 23rd, 08, 10:09 PM I got back my front fenders for my Chevelle from the media blaster. They had been stripped and then had rusted while in storage from the previous owner. They still have light and dark spots on them, but are smooth. I purchased etching primer, but do I need to sand the fenders some more to remove the darker spots. I'm new at this so any help would be appreciated. Attach are a couple of pictures

Dave Birdwell Mar 24th, 08, 7:03 PM If the rust has got down into the pores of the metal, it may be quicker and easier to have them blasted again. Since they're clean, it shouldn't cost too much to do it, then you know the rust isn't going to reappear. Try using some 180 grit on a DA sander, and see if the dark areas come clean with the DA. If they do, then you're good to go with just sanding them.
Etching primer will not prevent rust if you don't put something over it. Regular primer is porous as well, and if left in a damp area, it will get rust through it as well. The trend these days is to coat the bare metal with an epoxy, then work over that surface.

shadowgray396 May 21st, 08, 3:33 PM Just a update, After trying the DA sander and reading other post I had the fenders sand blasted and they came out great. I just need to fix one small area in the lower section of the drivers side. All you guys are great with your advise and knowledge. It has been very helpful doing my car. I'm making less mistakes by checking here first. So my hats off to you
:beers:
Here what the fenders look like now to this point.

bhawk May 23rd, 08, 9:43 AM You mention you will be fixing a small part of one fender. You need to know whether the primer now on the fenders is etch primer or epoxy primer. I am no expert, but have read many posts from experts and followed their advice to paint my car. You can use body filler over epoxy primer but not on top of etch primer. Maybe do a search of etch and epoxy primer to be sure you know whether you need to grind the primer totally off before you use any bondo in your fix. Also once you bondo the area to fill any minor issues, you will want to cover that bondo with a primer. Again, etch cannot be sprayed on bondo, unless it is sherwin williams brand where the spec sheets say you can spray their etch primer over "properly cured filler". Just a heads up on some issues for you to research before you do or finish that fender repair. Good ideal to get the primer spec sheets and read them to see how they cover or can be covered by bondo.

Thanks for the heads up, I plan to cut out the bad area and replace it with a small metal patch first. I will check the spec's on the paint. They have etching primer on them right now.
