I have an issue that I could use some help on. I would like to change my 1972 Malibu from full power steering over to power assist and am not sure how to go about it? II recently put on new Hotchkis springs and bilstein shocks that made a huge difference on handling, but would like to get a better feel of the road. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Do a search on " Jeep Grand Cherokee steering boxes" on this site and I believe it will answer your question much better than I can explain it. In real terms it gives the car more road feel as well as a quicker ratio. I have a 1971 malibu with the same suspension items that you have listed and I added a steering box similar to the one mentioned and it made a nice difference in "feel".

I'm running a "Jeep" box & love it. You will need to change the rag joint & also the fittings are the o-ring style.

Thanks for the info. It looks like I have a little reading to do!

The single biggest factor in steering feel is the size of the T-bar in the steering box. This little bar determines how much/hard you have to turn the wheel before hydraulic assist kicks in. Back in the day stock Chevelles ran like .165" T-bars. The popular Jeep Grand Cherokee boxes run .195" T-bars. There are some boxes that run as big as .210" T-bars. Most of the AGR boxes are this largest size.
I recently customized a box from a Camaro (changed steering stops) with the .210" T-bar and love it. But it is not for everyone as at least one person who I have let try it out thought it was too stiff.
