Yelcamino Mar 23rd, 08, 7:34 PM Ok guys, here's some pics of my Chevelle. I was able to back it out of the garage under its own power. :D

Thanks guys! :beers: All the specs are on my Fquick garage in my sig.
matt60j Mar 23rd, 08, 9:43 PM One of the nicest 66's I've ever seen!
gearheads78 Mar 24th, 08, 12:03 AM looks killer.... just when I was sure on an 18"/18" combo :clonk:
Bad66Chevelle454 Mar 24th, 08, 1:01 AM Herb,
Looking great!!! Definitely coming along. That car is begging to be on airbags. :)

MarkM Mar 24th, 08, 10:00 AM Looks great.
300Deluxe Mar 24th, 08, 2:52 PM Looks awesome!
F1 Speed Mar 24th, 08, 9:36 PM Sweet project. I watched your Dyno vid on the motor and I have to say congradulations on the HP and TQ numbers. Those JRP drive systems are really nice, aren't they?
Looks like your venting the valve covers to a breather tank. How is that working out for you? I was thinking of doing the same thing or maybe welding a bung to the rear of the manifold and venting to a breather tank from the lifter galley. Saw a picture of a BB Camaro in October issue of PHR and it really looks clean.
Anyhow, I just wanted to say how clean your build is. The whole car looks awesome.

Heh, heh, yeah it would look sweet on bags but I'm not going there. In fact, it currently has bags on the rear and I plan to replace them with coils down the road.

Thanks! I was a little surprised (and proud :D) when the numbers came up the way they did especially since I built the engine in my garage. I have to give credit to Dyno 2K for the build because it helped me wade through a lot of cam profiles and various heads before I settled on the current configuration.
Yep, it's venting into a breather tank down by the battery. Before I'm done it'll be venting through two tanks. The dyno operator told me that I really need about four breathers to properly vent a big block spinning over 6k but I'm going to try two and see how it works.
Clint44 Mar 24th, 08, 11:53 PM Your Chevelle looks great,Herb. Which one are you going to give to Carol? :D

Thanks Clint... neither, she has a Rustang. :)
MarkM Mar 25th, 08, 10:42 AM Do you know if that alternator bracket work with a typical GM10si alternator?
Yelcamino Mar 25th, 08, 11:35 AM Do you know if that alternator bracket work with a typical GM10si alternator?
I'm pretty sure it won't because the alternator I have is physically smaller than a standard one.
JRP makes a variety of brackets and pulley systems so you could probably find something that will work for your setup.
tom_a Mar 25th, 08, 12:08 PM Your car looks great.

I'm hoping to do a 66 or 67 this year.
rianbechtold Mar 26th, 08, 3:51 AM Please tell me you're going to keep the hood like that, I LOVE the color contrast:thumbsup:
Yelcamino Apr 12th, 08, 6:15 PM Here are some new pictures...
I had the valve covers, mc cover, air cleaner lid & bottom, and breather tanks all powder coated to match the wheel centers:

Bad66Chevelle454 Apr 13th, 08, 2:01 AM Lookin' good Herb! Are you going to paint the hood, or leave it black? You could almost get away with it black....but sorta import-ish if you ask me. I think the only thing that car needs is a nice big smokey burnout picture! :)
Yelcamino Apr 13th, 08, 9:15 AM Thanks! The hood won't be black but it won't be blue either. I'm going to keep that part a secret for a little while longer. :) The smokey burnout pics will be coming, don't worry!
hypa Apr 13th, 08, 4:51 PM That is one sexy 66'.
I really like what you've done with the grill too. It's nice to see someone doing something a bit different with their resto.
Bad66Chevelle454 Apr 13th, 08, 11:50 PM Herb,
Now I know why you were asking me what shade of pink looked best. :) Just kiddin! I should be able to post pictures of my car this week with the new paint job.
93Polo Apr 14th, 08, 12:31 PM I like the grill and the Forgelines. Good looking ride.
TonyGilliam Apr 30th, 08, 12:44 AM Beautiful car! I love everything about it. Stance, wheels, style, everything!
tunedbytad Apr 30th, 08, 1:05 AM what can you tell us about the PCV system?
DriverzInc May 2nd, 08, 2:04 PM The hood would look sweet with some of the grey from the wheels on it, maybe a wide rally stripe, or something like the Roadster Shop Chevelle.
Great looking car!!!!
jrb56 May 2nd, 08, 3:27 PM Ditto on the PCV system...
Mark SC&C May 2nd, 08, 3:38 PM Wow,great stance Herb. She`s a real looker! Mark SC&C
Yelcamino May 3rd, 08, 8:49 AM what can you tell us about the PCV system?
It's not really a PCV system just a pair of crankcase vents. I used a Moroso #22635 vented fitting on each valve cover w/ -12 lines feeding a pair of Moroso #85465 breather tanks mounted on either side of the radiator.
#22635 (mine were anodized black for some reason)

Bad66Chevelle454 May 4th, 08, 11:41 PM Herb,
The car is looking awesome! What else is left??? Looks like you're pretty darn close to being "done" if thats even possible. IMO, the exhaust is okay. I've never been a fan of seeing exhaust, I like it hidden and out of the way. Its something to be heard, not see. Like I said, just my opinion.
And I like your new toy too. :)
ftgallant May 5th, 08, 8:15 AM Beautiful 66!, Curious as to what oil pan you have on your engine, and clearances to ground?

Thanks Frank!
The oil pan is a Moroso road race pan, part #31555. It won't fit in a Chevelle with the engine in the stock location, which is why I moved the engine back about 1/2". The pan now clears the cross member.
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/Chevelle/Suspension/mil-31555_w.jpg
Ground clearance at the moment is 4.5" to the bottom of the front crossmember. It looks like it will be enough but I haven't driven it yet so my opinion may change after I get some miles on it.

Hi Tim,
Thanks! The main things I need to finish are the interior, the alignment, and road testing.
I'm not a big fan of seeing the exhaust either, but I thought I would try it this way for a while because it was the easiest way to do it at the time. I may end up changing it down the road.
Speaking of interior, I got my Sparco Torino II seats last week along with a bunch of interior parts.

Yelcamino Jun 1st, 08, 6:55 PM Love the car and seats. I plan to get the Torino II's also. The Milano's look really nice but a little pricey.
Thanks! The Milanos were my first choice but I couldn't see spending that much on seats when there are so many other things that need attention.
Hot66ss Jun 1st, 08, 8:14 PM Hey herb, in one of your underhood shots i see some sort of spiltter ran from the ps pump to the hydroboost to the gear box. Im assuming this is a system from hydrotech, did it come with this or is it something you purchased seperate to clean up the install? I got my hydroboost still sitting in the box (not home right now) and was just running over in my head how to run it. Nice car btw!
Thanks

Hi Tom,
Thanks, glad you like what I'm doing. Yes the hydraboost is from Hydratech. I'm not sure what you're looking at, but I bought extra braided line and fittings when I ordered my system. The lines run from the p/s pump to the h/b to the gear box to the cooler and then back to the p/s pump. Hopefully this diagram I drew makes sense...
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/Chevelle/454/Lumpp_Chevelle_hydroboost_line_rout.jpg
Actually, there's one thing on my diagram that I changed on the car... When talking with Paul at Hydratech he recommended the by pass line (blue) from the h/b unit should tee into the return line to the pump (green) to ensure there's no pressure build up in that line.
Hot66ss Jun 2nd, 08, 10:18 PM Thanks Herb, that helps a lot. Is that a short water pump setup your running? If so whos PS pump are you using?
Thanks
Tom

Tom
Yep, it's a short water pump (Meziere) and the p/s pump came in a kit I bought from Jones Racing Products.
Yelcamino Jun 24th, 08, 7:40 PM When I ordered my Sparco seats I also ordered the mounting brackets but they were on back order. It's been a few weeks since I got the seats and I finally got tired of waiting for the brackets. So last Sunday I fabricated a seat bracket for the driver side Sparco. Hopefully next weekend I can get the passenger side done.

Thanks! I have all the badging, but I like it better without too.
Yelcamino Jul 13th, 08, 11:49 PM Herb,
Is that a Lokar pedal setup?
Hey Tim,
Yep, it's a Lokar pedal set. Of course, when I did the Elky, Lokar didn't have anything for it so I had to use 55-57 Chevy pedals. They're pretty similar.
How's your Chevelle coming along?
Bad66Chevelle454 Jul 14th, 08, 12:43 AM Herb,
It's coming along real well. Yesterday I bought a front windshield. Some idiot(me) cracked the other one taking it out. I installed that, so then I was able to install the cowl, windshield wipers, etc. I'm taking the seats in tomorrow after work to get them reupholstered. So not too terribly much longer. Doesn't look like there is a ton left to do on your car either...I see roof rail seals and carpet...what else?

Glad to hear you're moving along on your project.
I have a lot of little things to do along with a few large items... I want to have carpet and a headliner installed but first I need to have a 6 point roll bar installed. Until I get my registration squared away I can't drive it so I can't get the roll bar done. You know how things tend to stack up.
All in due time! I just hope I can get it together enough to drive before I transfer next summer!

I'm doing great now - I'm off work for the next 9 days! :hurray:
No new pics at the moment but I hope to have some in the near future. Right now I'm waiting for my rear coil springs to be made. Once they're installed I can get started on the alignment and then I'll be able take it for a real test drive.
I haven't got any emails from you in a while. Can you resend it?

Looking real good Tim!
Yelcamino Oct 12th, 08, 2:08 PM New update today, I finally drove the Chevelle! I finished the alignment yesterday and tied up some loose ends and took it for a spin! It drives very good considering the heavy springs and short sidewall tires.
The only issue at the moment is the steering shaft it touching one of the header tubes. When I accelerate in 5th gear the column and steering wheel shake. I assume the engine is shaking and passing it to the steering shaft/column/steering wheel. I have a Flaming River tilt column I'm going to install and with it two u-joints and a collapsible shaft. Once that's installed, the shaft should no longer touch the header tube.
Yelcamino Oct 15th, 08, 10:49 PM While I was out driving the Chevelle the other day, I stopped at the park and took some pictures and made a couple of videos. Hopefully you like what you see and hear!

Yelcamino Oct 16th, 08, 3:07 PM Herb,

Thanks! She drives real nice. 5th gear is a little short (.82) but this engine doesn't like to run slower than 2200 rpm so it works out.
I've still got a plan for the hood, nothing major but I think it will be slightly different than the norm. :)
Yelcamino Oct 16th, 08, 3:08 PM Very nice videos. They only thing missing is the long burnout :)
Once the trans is broken in and has fresh oil I'll be sure to make some smoke. :D
Bad66Chevelle454 Oct 16th, 08, 5:13 PM It might just be my personal taste....but it looks like it needs to go down in the rear about an inch or so.....

Yelcamino Oct 16th, 08, 8:05 PM It might just be my personal taste....but it looks like it needs to go down in the rear about an inch or so.....
Don't worry, the rear will come down some. Before I send the rear springs back to Coil Spring Specialties to have the ride height dropped, I want to see where it sits after the roll bar, headliner, carpet and fuel cell are in place. If the weight from those things don't drop it any, then I'll pull the springs and have them altered.

pist0lpete Nov 3rd, 08, 5:24 PM I am digging that spoiler for sure. Can't wait to see the finished product.
PickSS Nov 3rd, 08, 5:57 PM Dam* that looks sweet. You just keep hitting it out of the park with each mod you make!
Yelcamino Nov 3rd, 08, 6:03 PM Thanks guys! The spoiler will stay as you see it (except painted of course), similar to Smokey's #13 Chevelle. The biggest difference is my spoiler follows the "V" of the trunk lid where Smokey's went straight across.

Obviously the spoiler is in bare metal but it will be powder coated. The openings for the brake cooling ducts are functional.
Hopefully I'll have pictures of the 8 point roll bar in the next few days.

CDN SS Nov 4th, 08, 12:54 PM Hey Herb lookin good ....... is your 9" rear stock width ? Shock bracket location is it stock ??and did you have to roll the fender lip to get tire clearance ?? I see you running 5.5 backset wheels I would have thought you would have hit the shock mounts with my stock width rear and 9x 5" backset wheels does not appear I could get anything wider in there because of shock mount and rear end width have more fender clearance .not rolled

Thanks! The rear is stock width for a '66. The shock brackets are moved inboard to clear the disc brake caliper brackets, which in turn allows for more back space on the wheels. To be on the safe side I rolled the rear outer fender lips.

I rolled the outer wheel well lip. Along with 5.5" backspace on the wheels gives about .5" -.75" clearance on each side of the tire. I did the same thing to my El Camino years ago.
tommycomfort Nov 11th, 08, 4:05 PM Herb,
Looks like you have LED tail lights. If so, where did you get them? I see there are multiple guys on ebay selling them now.

A guy in MN made the LED's for the El Camino but according to his web page it looks like he's not doing it anymore... http://home.earthlink.net/~jekled/
It's been a while and I can't remember for sure but I think I got the Chevelle's off eBay.

Thanks! I was looking at the small one available through www.spoilersbyrandy.com (http://www.spoilersbyrandy.com) but I wanted something more aggresive with openings for brake cooling ducts. I may still add one of Randy's to the El Camino.
PickSS Nov 11th, 08, 9:33 PM I agree it's more aggresive, but it fits your car perfectly. What color you going to paint it?

It will be the same powdercoat gray as the wheel centers.

Yelcamino Nov 13th, 08, 2:52 PM Just to make sure there's no confusion, the rear spoiler, front spoiler and air cleaner pan were made by Mark who runs the Fab Shop located in Pound, VA. He's not on this forum but he goes by "Tig Man" on pro-touring.com. Mark is also building the roll bar and drive shaft loop.
In case anyone is interested, Mark worked on the #4 Kodak car for about 16 years and is obviously a very skilled fabricator. He has a blue '79 Camaro that is essentially a Sprint car with a Camaro body draped over it. It was in Hot Rod a few years back.

Yelcamino Dec 4th, 08, 4:43 PM Thanks! There probably won't be any action shots until spring. Once the roll bar is done, I'll be taking it to my friend's place in NC for the winter. While it's there, the headliner, carpet, and hood paint will get done. When I get it back home I'm going to have the rear spring height reset because the back sits too high right now.

F1 Speed Dec 9th, 08, 8:52 PM Awesome design for the roll bar:thumbsup: It really is worth having a custom fit roll bar. The door bar design is exactly what I plan for my project as well. Do the down tubes on the rear struts under the package tray tie into the rear cross member? What size tubing did you use, 1-5/8 or 1-3/4?
Your car is well thought out and designed and I love everything about it. Fantastic work!

Thanks! I appreciate your compliments! The kudos for the roll bar should go to Mark at the Fab Shop in Pound, VA since he's the brains and talent behind it!
The tubing is 1-3/4" DOM seamless. I was told the bars that go under the package tray connect to the upper rear spring cup.

Yelcamino Apr 3rd, 09, 7:59 PM It's back from the upholstery shop. They installed carpet, a headliner, and made floor mats. I have to go back next week to pick up the roll bar pads. If anyone knows where I can get these two pieces (or at least a picture so I know what to look for), I'd really appreciate a point in the right direction!

As racey as this machine is, here's an option to think about for pedal covers vs. the Lokar ones you have now. They also have an adaptor for the Lokar gas pedal it looks like you have too, just ask. I just made that identical swap in my '66 and love the look. Downside--these you have to drill the pedals to mount unlike the Lokar ones. Has the e-brake pedal cover too. I also painted the Lokar gas pedal bracket black to match the others.
Just my $0.02, love the car.

Bad66Chevelle454 Apr 10th, 09, 2:25 PM Herb,
She's looking sweet! Looks like you got the ride height dialed in also. The plastic molding that holds the headliner is available...there is one strip for the front, and whole set for the rear. I know True Connections has them, www.true-connections.com , part numbers IT-6470 for the front, and IT-6471 for the rear windshield. However, I'm sure your favorite parts supplier would have them also. On a side note, the side headliner moldings(chrome pieces), are available in a kit from them also, part number HM-6670.
Good Luck-

Thanks for the part numbers Tim. I found the metal strips that I was missing. While I wait for them to arrive I'll order the windshield trim piece (I have the rear). I'm not sure if I want the side moldings because at the moment I have the black U shaped trim along the edge and I kinda like how it looks. I guess I could always get the side molding and have it powder coated black. Either way, thanks for the part numbers.

Yelcamino May 9th, 09, 2:03 PM Car is looking great. What shifter boot/bezel is that?
The shifter is the one that came with the Tremec, but the shifter stick is an old Hurst I had laying around. I cut it and redrilled the holes to get a comfortable angle. The boot and bezel are Lokar; they're sold separately.

Are those custom front inner fenders?I'm looking for some info on your hood. basically who makes it, how did it fit, do you recommend it or another one. where do i find one? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the compliment!
The front innner fender wells are stock (repro actually) I just cut a section out of each one so I could get to the upper control arms for adjustments.
I got the hood from Tamraz on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1967-Chevelle-El-Camino-2-Steel-Cowl-Induction-Hood_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZQ7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q 3a30QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em14Q2el1262QQhashZitem5 acf47b5a1QQitemZ390024639905QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTr uckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories). When I bought mine it was $295 plus shipping compared to $495 plus shipping from the usual places (Year One, OPG, etc). The guy at Tamraz assured me that the body parts all came from the same place regardless of the name on the box. Sure enough when my hood arrived, it was in a Goodmark box. The hood fit nice and I'm very happy with it.
One word of caution, if you order body parts that arrive via truck frieght, before you sign the delivery form, open the box and inspect your parts. I say this because when my hood was delivered, it was pouring rain outside and I neglected to open the box. When I finally did open the box, the driver side corner of the hood near the windshield was slightly bent, probably from someone setting that corner down a little too hard. The damage was minor and had I seen it, I probably wouldn't have sent it back. I'm just saying, check it before you sign for it.

Thats the first honest lie in this thread. ;)
Wicked car. If my alley werent so dark, broke and in an engineering deficit then I'd say thats right up my alley....but, my alley is on the other side of the tracks. Glad that I can see yours from here though. Its a nice view.
Yelcamino Jul 9th, 09, 2:49 PM You know I love your stuff Herb. You have great taste and technical savvy. Nice job Amigo.
(Don't ever build a wagon. You'll make mine look worse than it already does...)
Thanks Scotch! Don't down play your wagon, that's one sweet ride and you're not afraid to drive it, which makes it even nicer IMO!
Speaking of wagons, I've always thought a '66 wagon would be a nice addition to my garage. :D Unfortunately, my wife feels otherwise.
Just get a bigger garage, give it time and find something she really wants ;) Next you'll want a PT 4 door 66...

An honest lie! Yeah I guess it is. Last Friday I took the Chevelle to the local cruise in at Chick-fil-a and after about an hour or so when the parking lot filled in, people were all over it. It was the first time out for the Chevelle other than occasional test drives. I was pretty impressed with the positive comments. The reason I say this is because compared to my El Camino, the Chevelle is rough around the edges. There's a lot of paint chips, the body isn't as straight (or shiny) and the body panels need better alignment here and there. I guess it's more of a brawler than a cruiser. I'm ok with it.
Oh, and thanks! Wicked is good! :beers:

Hey buddy, how's it going? I'm back in northern VA now in case you were wondering. As for garages, we've been looking around for a house and everything we find has a tiny little 2 car garage that looks like it was designed for a pair of Geo Metros! I guess most people don't see a need for a large garage when they usually only use it to store lawn mowers and junk and park their cars in the driveway. On top of that, to get a three car garage you have to buy a $700,000 house with 5000 sq ft of living space. Carol and I don't need anything that big (or expensive) for just the two of us! We're not giving up though, I'm sure the perfect house & garage is out there somewhere waiting for us to find it.
offroaddriver Jul 10th, 09, 7:30 PM On the rear wheel and tire you said you have .5 and .75 clearance which is the inside and the outside? Do you think i can fit it with out rolling the edge? maybe run a lower series side wall?
Yelcamino Jul 10th, 09, 7:54 PM On the rear wheel and tire you said you have .5 and .75 clearance which is the inside and the outside? Do you think i can fit it with out rolling the edge? maybe run a lower series side wall?
The .75 is on the frame side and .5 on the body side. I think with some careful measuring, I could fit a 11" wheel in the rear. Of course, there's no room for error with a tight squeeze like that so I'm content to keep 10" in the rear.
You could try w/o rolling the edge, but considering the cost of hi-perf tires these days, I wouldn't risk it.

good luck with the house search in NOVA... This is one reason I moved to St. Mary's county and got a decent sized house with plenty of land to build a garage on... Now all I need is a bank account to pay for the garage! ;)
Let me know if your running around near the White House I am now over at 18th and F NW...

I don't know if I mentioned it or not, but we sold the WV house and it closes on Friday. We already bought a new house and it will be finished being built sometime in Dec. So far things are moving along in the right direction.
I tend not to go in the city much if I can help it. Since we're in VA, I decided to join the VA Chevelle Club, so I'm sure I'll see you at some of the upcoming shows.
Yelcamino Jul 28th, 09, 8:22 PM Since this is my build thread, I have to keep the updates coming.

Hey thanks! According to their web site, the fans are 3420 cfm.
I'm changing the rad because I doubt my current rad will be able to handle the cooling duties when I start to push it. As it sits, driving in traffic without screwing around, the temp hovers between 195-205. My El Camino with a Ron Davis rad will maintain 190 or less with the A/C on regardless of outside temps or type of driving. Since the Chevelle doesn't have A/C, I figure the new rad should have no problem keeping the temps in check.
Yelcamino Jul 30th, 09, 8:12 PM I got another update for you. I ordered an oil cooler from Performance Rod & Custom (http://www.prchotrod.com/index.html) and it arrived today. It's a lot bigger than it looks in their web catalog but it is a seriously nice piece...

I think I'm going to mount it behind the driver side headlights. There seems to be plenty of room and it looks like it will be able to get cooler air; and most importantly, it will be protected.

Bad66Chevelle454 Aug 23rd, 09, 12:41 AM That looks awesome Herb! Really adds to the look of the car. I know that AN upper hose looks awesome, but does it flow enough to keep the engine cool? Just comparing it to a "stock" size hose it only seems about half the size.

Thanks. The upper hose is small, in fact, its small size acts as a restriction in place of a thermostat. I did the same thing to my El Camino and on the hottest days it maintains 180-190 temps even with the A/C running. Based on that, I'm sure the Chevelle will keep its cool.
Bad66Chevelle454 Aug 23rd, 09, 12:59 PM Herb,
That makes sense. I didn't think about it. Well it came out looking great. It's really sharp and clean looking. Someday, I'll upgrade to a nice aluminum radiator when I can afford it. :)
What all is left for the car? It's pretty much done right?

Right now I'm still playing around with the front suspension. I'm not happy with it and tomorrow I'm going to order another set of front coils. I also need to hook up my LM-1 and do some carb tuning - it's running very rich.
This coming winter I have a few things on the table... I haven't made up my mind yet (mostly depends on finances) but I want to get an aluminum block. I've always wanted one and I figure if the car loses a few pounds in the process, even better. If I get the block I plan to go with a solid roller this time around and possibly EFI. I also want to change the clutch and get a hydraulic TO bearing. Ever since I moved the engine closer to the firewall, the clutch linkage geometry isn't quite right. It works ok, but it's not smooth like the Elky.
I'm sure there are other things I'll want to do, just give me time to think of them! :D
PS - I should have your DVD in the mail this week. Sorry it took so long!

Told you that you should of air bagged it. Think it's too stiff? Let a little air out. :) Just kidding with yah. Sounds to me like the car is 'done' minus some things you want to change for your preference...but nothing major needs to actually be done. I think the EFI is a great idea. I would go that route, if I had the money. That's definitely a 'bolt on' item that I can do later on down the road though.
No sweat on the DVD. I really appreciate it. Right now I'm still welding my firewall, then I have to grind and paint it. I finished welding, grinding, primering, and painting the frame today. I'll let that sit for a day or two to dry out good, then I can start putting the front suspension back together and get the car on it's own wheels again. Thanks again. :D

No air bags for me, thanks! :noway: Yeah, it's done for the most part, just some updates to keep it fresh so to speak.
You'll have to post some pics on your thread as you make progress. The DVD went out on Monday so it should be there this week. Hopefully it contains what you're looking for.
Bad66Chevelle454 Aug 25th, 09, 7:41 PM Thanks again for the DVD. I have some idea's floating in my head of what I'm going to do to keep things clean....but some inspiration for a few other things would definitely help.
The next time I post any sort of updates will probably this weekend sometime. Thursday I have to go out and get some new airline and fittings for the bags, then I can completely reassemble the front suspension and steering. As of right now the frame and all the suspension is ready to be put back on, but I'm still welding and grinding the firewall smooth.
protouring66 Aug 25th, 09, 9:53 PM hey sorry if its been asked before, but i looked all over and didn't see any info on it, how did you finish the back of the interior? you know the rear seat? did you keep the seat as a filler or finish it with out a seat? if you kept it how did you work the cage around the seat? if you have some pics that would be great, i want to cage mine but not sure how to finish that part of it, i'm still a ways off but thought i would ask while i saw this,
great lookin car by the way!

I got rid of the rear seat because of the roll bar. Not only would it be a PITA for people to get in the back seat, once they were there, it wouldn't be a very safe place for them to ride. Anyway, a rear bulkhead was made to separate the trunk from the passenger compartment. It was also sealed because I moved the battery to the trunk.
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/Chevelle/Fab%20Shop/HerbLumppRollBar1001.jpg
The carpet goes all the way up to the rear window.

protouring66 Aug 25th, 09, 11:48 PM that deffinately answered my question, and gave me a new idea for it, thanks, and i wish i could honestly say my car is sweet without laughing at my self, :D its just a primer coated shell in need of floor and trunk pans, and an engine, lol too indecisive, haven't settle on one yet, bb or sb? is the question, but more about yours, is the seat rail set up custom made by you or is that a kit for the roll cage set up? i really like the look and simplicity,

Yours is in primer? I thought you had the silver '66 w/ the Forgeline wheels. I'm getting all of these '66's confused! :clonk: It doesn't matter, any '66 is sweet in my opinion, even if it is in primer!
Just for clarification - Mark at the Fab Shop in Pound, VA built my roll bar and seat rails. I have to give credit where credit is due. If you're anywhere near Pound, you should get in touch with Mark if you're in the market for a custom roll bar or cage.
As for your engine choice, I'd say go with either a BBC or a LSx engine.

Nope. I've tried a couple different ideas and there's just not enough room for the hose to snake around the suspension components while allowing the front of the tire to have room when turned in toward the frame.
I haven't given up; I'm sure there's a way, I just haven't found it yet.

I didn't do too bad on the course. There were faster cars and slower cars. I think I was in the middle of the pack of mostly first and second gen Camaros and a handful of other muscle cars and a few late models.
Even though the front coils are 1000lbs/inch it looks like it leans way too much in the turns. I may need to go up in sway bar size a bit.
The little vid cam on my roof belongs to someone else so I doubt I'll ever see the vid.

Yelcamino Nov 29th, 09, 7:45 PM Last month I took the Chevelle to Maxton, NC to see how it would do on the standing mile. Because I was a rookie I had to make licensing runs starting at 125 mph and working my way up in 25 mph increments.
Due to a bad accident and poor weather, I was only able to make two runs.
The first was 125.8 mph and I followed that up with a 161.3 mph. Overall I think it was a good showing for my first event. I'm going back in April '10 to see if I can get my license for 175 mph.
Here's a link to some pictures and a few video clips (http://www.flickr.com/photos/42635971@N06/sets/72157622856988842/).

I'm not an expert by any means, but my understanding is the other brands are "speed density" systems which means they use a variety of tables in the computer to decide how much fuel to inject whereas the Mass Flo system uses "mass air flow" to decide how much fuel to inject. According to the people at Mass Flo, if after the engine is running and I decide to change something on my engine such as the cam or heads, I won't have to edit the tables like a speed density system because the Mass Flo computer will adjust to the additional air being taken in by the engine.
Being lazy like I am, I figured why mess with a laptop and tables when I can let the computer do the job?
Will it work like Mass Flo says it will? Beats me, but I'm hoping it does. I talked to a couple people that have this system and they say it works as advertised...

The WidowMaker Feb 13th, 10, 11:45 PM are you going to run the a1000 in tank? why not the 044? are you getting the sump with check balls from hector? yours will be on the road way before mine, so if you got the same as me im anxious for results.

Hey Tim,
I'm running my pump outside the tank and Hector is making some custom changes to it for me. Are you going EFI? If yes, which system?

MAF systems are also more sensitive to large overlap cams (intake reversion), especially with one mounted so close to the throttle body

That's good to know; hopefully my cam won't create any problems.

Bad66Chevelle454 Feb 14th, 10, 3:15 PM I'm always interested in what you're up to Herb!!! I'm really interested in this EFI kit too. That's one of those things on my list of "someday when I want to wrench on the car." Right now I'm sticking with my carb set-up, but it would be nice to convert to EFI someday. Get a few more ponies and hopefully a little better MPG.
Keep us posted!! :)

Hey Tim! I'm not too worried about MPG, what I'm really looking forward to is having the engine in a consistantly better state of tune. With the carb every day the tune is different, it could be better than the day before or worse depeding on weather conditions. With the EFI I'm hoping the computer will help the engine run better regardless of weather (or altitude).
Hopefully all the trouble and expense will be worth it! :beers:

Does the kit have a O2 sensor to pick up on the A/F Mixture???

Yep, it's got two.

Pretty spiffy. I'll be interested to know how it works. I'm just barely upgrading to A/C. I just came in from wrenching the on the Vintage Air unit.
Yelcamino Feb 19th, 10, 8:45 PM I got a couple of hard lines done yesterday, one front and one rear...

I ordered a couple of 90* ORB-AN fittings from XRP today for the other two lines. It turns out I won't be able to make the bends as tight as I originally pictured. Fortunately the XRP fittings will solve my problem.
In case you're wondering, the hard line is 1/2" stainless and it takes a professional bender (not me, the tool) to make clean bends...

Top one is for 1/2" and the bottom one is for 5/8".

Hi Herb,
Those benders are a great investment and work really good. Just takes a little practice and patience and you will be rewarded with good results. I used the same benders on my lines as well. A good source for stainless tube is McMaster Carr. They offer it in lots of different sizes and wall thicknesses and lengths. A good 37* flareing tool is a must as well and Speedway Motors offers a nice ratcheting one at a good price. Not sure who makes it but it looks like the Ridgid flaring tool I used.

Mark SC&C Feb 22nd, 10, 2:34 PM Looks like you`re having a lot of fun with the car Herb! Give me a call and I`d be happy to go over your setup with you. Looks to me like you might use more rear rebound dampening to prevent transfering too much weight and load forward. Great pics! Mark SC&C
PS. Herb your e mail isn`t working, give me a call or drop me an e mail if you get a chance. I`d like to get a few of those pics from you if I can. :)

Thanks Mike! Your engine looks pretty nice sitting there! Is that a vacuum pump down low on the driver side?
I have a 37* flaring tool already, I just didn't have benders for anything larger than 3/8" tubing, until now. :) I'm just about done with the hard lines then I'll post up some new pictures. As soon as that's done I'm going to start tearing into the engine so I can install the new intake and get the computer and harness figured out. I hope to have all that done before the new fuel tank shows up on my door step!

Hi Herb. Thanks for the compliment. The pump is a KRC Power Steering Pump on a DSE pump bracket. I am waiting for the weather to warm up a little more and I'm gonna start in on the 5/8" hard lines that run along the side of the pan for the remote oil filter and the 3/8" lines for the trans cooler that run along the pan on the other side. Haven't tryed working with the 5/8" stainless tubing yet. Should be a learning experience.
What are you doing for a new fuel tank? I picked up a Fuel Safe Sportsman Fuel Cell that has a bladder in it with duel pick ups and surge tank but I'm not sure I still want to go that way now. I was planning on sinking it into the trunk pan about 3" or so with a square tube cage around it but I'm having second thoughts about cutting the trunk pan. Wanted to go that way to allow custom tail pipes that are not so visible from the side and better clearance for the custom A.R.B. I'm thinking about doing. Not to crazy about the idea of having to replace the cell foam every couple years either :noway:
Looking forward as always to seeing your project develop further. I think your Chevelle is one of the baddest projects on the board and I love the updates you keep doing

Ok, I thought it was a p/s pump at first but it looked different, which why I figured it might be a vacuum pump. I'd like to add a vac pump to my engine but I've got too much going on right now. Maybe down the road I'll look into it.
I'm looking foward to working with the 5/8" tubing and like you said, should be a learning experience!
I'm having Rick's Hot Rods build a tank for me with modifications to work with my setup. At first I was going to get a cell from either Fuel Safe or ATL but like you, I'm not interested in replacing the cell foam every so many years, not to mention the fact that the bladder has to be replaced every five years! Maybe if this was an all-out race car with sanctioning body requirements, but it's a street car! After I got past the fuel cell idea, I decided to build my own stainless tank but after pricing materials, for only a couple hundred more, I was able to get Rick's to build it to my specs. So that's the route I went. I ordered it about two weeks ago so I'm hoping to get it some time in the next two weeks.
Another thing I'm working on is updating the exhaust system. I'm removing the Spin Tech Truck/RV mufflers and replacing them with a pair of these babies:
28355
They have 3.5" inlets and 2.5x4" oval outlets. Instead of going over the axle, the oval exhaust tips will come out in front of the rear tires. I haven't made up my mind yet, but there's a chance both tips will come out on the passenger side and of course it will all end up being black ceramic coated to keep it stealthy and to maintain the streetfighter vibe.
Oh, and thanks, I'm glad you're liking my ideas and mods! My wife is on the fence about most of the stuff I do to the cars. She likes them to be pretty and not too loud. Bleh.

I've seen your video of your motor on the Dyno. That thing is a beast  You don't need any stinkin vac. pump for that animal.
I know what you mean about the fuel cell draw backs. Unfortunatly, I pulled the trigger to soon on mine and found out afterwords about the recomended Bladder and Foam replacement time :(
Man you just keep makin that thing meaner with every new idea. I think your exhaust plan is awesome along with the EFI and Fuel System upgrades.

Thanks! I'm pretty happy with the engine results considering I pre-built it on my computer using Dyno 2000 and then bought all the parts. The actual dyno numbers were within 5hp of the simulated dyno numbers! The dyno operator said it would easily pick up another 20hp with a vacuum pump. Not sure if the gain is worth the cost though. I think a quality vacuum pump setup will crest $1000.
I'm looking forward to updating the exhaust. :D An added plus with the new system is I'll be able to lower the rear of the car a bit. In all the pictures I have of it, it looks to me like it's jacked up in back! I can't go any lower right now with the tail pipes going over the axle.
On top of that, the Sparco seats are getting moved to the El Camino and the Kirky aluminum road race seats are going in. I also have LED front turn signals to install. Sheesh, I thought I was pretty much done with this car! I guess not!

I wont be using it on my new build so its for sale. Pump, bracket, braided lines fittings and breather tank for 450.00. I can get you some better pictures if you want.
the only thing it needs its a little clean up with some scothbrite as there is some real light surface rust on sone of the steel parts (shaft and bolts)

Thanks for the offer, but unfortunately, I have no room to mount it! I thought once I removed the mechanical fuel pump there would be enough space below the alternator for a vacuum pump, but no luck! I didn't realize how low my alternator is positioned. The p/s pump is on the other side so no dice there either.
