: '66 PT Chevelle update...
Yelcamino Mar 27th, 10, 10:05 AM Since it's been a while, I thought it was time to post an update...
So far I have the intake installed, the harness, gas tank, fuel pump, and fuel pump speed controller installed. I'm actually making progress!
Because the EFI computer is freakin' big, the only choice I had was to give up my glove box and make a new home for the computer. It's a pretty good fit, keeps it out of harms way, and I have relatively easy access to it.
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/Chevelle/EFI/DSC01507.jpg
Here's the engine with the intake on. In this picture I haven't finished routing the harness but it looks better now. So far I think my only complaint about the Mass Flo system is the harness is pretty bulky. It's simple, but there's a lot of it. I guess because it's "universal" it has to have a lot of extra length to accomodate all possibilities. I ended up cutting about 4 feet off the wires for the coil! Where did Mass Flo think I was going to put the coil, in the trunk?
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/Chevelle/EFI/DSC01508.jpg
I mounted the fuel pump speed controller in the trunk. It turned out to be a pretty good place for the wiring.
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/Chevelle/EFI/DSC01522.jpg
And the fuel pump and pre/post filters are mounted on the Rick's tank. I added the 3/4 x 3/4 square tubes for the filter brackets.
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/Chevelle/EFI/DSC01521.jpg
I still have a list of things to do, like finish the underdash wiring, run the fuel pump "on" wire back the speed controller, and finish hard lines from the tank to the engine.
Yelcamino Apr 4th, 10, 8:21 PM Ok, it's done. The EFI is installed and it's running. I haven't had a chance to drive it much but it seems to run pretty good. I still have some small adjustments to make but I'm pretty happy with it so far.
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/Chevelle/EFI/DSC00851.jpg
Try to ignore the big orange line on the left. That's the only heat shielding I could find locally and I needed something to protect the fuel supply line.
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/Chevelle/EFI/DSC00852.jpg
Here's the Rick's tank. You can see how low it hangs...

In addition to the EFI, I also swapped the Sparco's for a pair of Kirky road race seats.

Of course, a full report isn't complete without a little video clip! :D

Bad66Chevelle454 Apr 5th, 10, 12:20 AM Looks great as always Herb!!! I'm interested to see what you have to say about the EFI after you get some miles on it. That's something I've thought about doing myself later on down the road.

Thanks Tim! I'll let you know how it goes!
wayne70 Apr 5th, 10, 11:24 AM Sound's great Herb. I am sure you will not go back to a carb after installing the injection. I may need to rent your 1/2" tube bender for my new injection system. Hope to see you and the chevelle in sept.

Thanks Wayne! If you need the 1/2" bender, let me know. I can mail it down to you or bring it in Sep and you mail it back when you're done.
As for the EFI, considering I have the Elky to do back to back comparisons, I'll have to reserve my opinion until I have some seat time!
F1 Speed Apr 5th, 10, 6:39 PM Lookin and sounding good Herb  As always nice work. It just keeps getting better.

Hey Herb,
I am in the market for a radiator setup for my car. That Ron Davis rig you got sure looks nice. Have you had any cooling issues with this setup? How does this compare to alumitech? Do you mind if I ask you what it cost you?
Thanks
Tom
ed1le Sep 1st, 10, 8:53 PM Awesome! Not only did you get a feature, you got the cover!

Hi Tom,
The only issue I've had is the engine ran too cool for the EFI. I ended up having to install a 195 thermostat in place of the restrictor disc and adjust the Spal fans to come on at a higher temp. It still takes a while to get above 195 but once there it hovers around 200 which is perfect for the EFI. When I had the carb on it, the temps stayed in the 170-175 range.
As for cost, I can't remember off the top of my head but I think with the fans/shroud it was a little under a grand. I'll dig through my receipts and see if I can find the actual price.

I had no clue about the cover, so that was very cool to see when I opened the mail box today!

I've never had an Alumitech so I can't say good or bad, but I have had two other Ron Davis rads and they were worth every penny.
Oh, and thanks!

Thanks Tom! Are you going to be at RTTH? Ted and his wife are flying out from Phoenix to go with me and my wife.
Yelcamino Oct 22nd, 10, 10:33 PM I haven't posted any updates in a while so I thought I would share my new front spoiler.
The reason for this one is convenience. On the rare occasion that I need to trailer the car, the old spoiler needed to be removed and it was a bit of a PITA to do. Then I had to reinstall it after the car came off the trailer, then do it all over again to get home.
So, this new spoiler attaches to a frame that stays mounted to the bumper. The button head allen bolts are easily removed so the spoiler can come on and off with very little trouble. On top of that, the openings for the brake cooling ducts weren't in the best place. The new one is center mounted which makes for better routing of the hoses going to the rotors. There's also a splitter on the bottom.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/Chevelle/DSC02399.jpg
For when I do LSR at the Maxton Mile, I have a second spoiler that attaches to the same frame on the bumper and the splitter swaps between the two (it's not on in this picture). The Maxton spoiler extends down to about 1.75" above the ground and doesn't have the brake duct opening.

I like it Bryan! Now that the engine is done, what's next?
pist0lpete Nov 15th, 10, 11:54 AM That is a pretty slick setup. The only other thing I could think of doing would be to possibly paint/powdercoat it to match the hood, but lets be honest the first priority is function.
Bad66Chevelle454 Nov 15th, 10, 1:39 PM That's a sweet looking spoiler Herb! I like how you have two different ones. The splitter style spoiler looks very NASCAR.
Have you tested the car with and without the spoiler? Just curious as to how 'functional' they really are. Either way, it looks off the top cool!

That's what I am wondering too. Cause honestly I think your car looks about as perfect as I can imagine a 66 chevelle looking without it, but with it, personally, not so much. But if it helps it that much for what you do with it, then I'd probably run it too.

Powder coating is on the "to do" list. I was going to take the spoiler parts to the shop this weekend but completely forgot about it! Next weekend will have to do.

Thanks! Unfortunately no; I never ran the car at Maxton without the spoiler.
Personally, I think the spoilers are functional even though there was no science in its design other than peoples' racing experience. The guy that built the first spoiler was a chassis builder for the Kodak car for 14 years. The new spoiler was built by a seasoned road racer turned race car builder.
I was working off the principle that it's a good thing if you can keep air out from under the car at speed. The original spoiler was only about 4-5" below the bumper, which left a lot of open space between it and the track surface.
Here it is at rest...
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/Chevelle/Maxton/Atrest2.jpg
And here it is at 163 mph...
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/Chevelle/Maxton/At163mph2.jpg
After seeing the "at speed pictures" it looked to me like I was getting a little bit of front end lift. So the idea to make a spoiler that was even closer to the ground with a splitter came to life.
With the new spoiler in place at my last outing at Maxton, I was only able to go 161 mph. The lower mph is due to the fact that I changed the rear gears from 3.25 to 3.70 and I tried 5th (.82) on the top end instead of 4th like I was doing with the 3.25 rear. I was curious to see how it would do but I think the engine pulls harder in 4th.
Here it is with the Maxton spoiler in place. In this picture I'm just getting off the starting line (ignore the teeth, I had some extra time and spray paint to waste)...
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/Chevelle/Maxton/Attakeoff.jpg
So next time I plan to try 3.00 gears with 4th. That combined with a 27" tall rear tire, 6800 rpm through the lights, I should be running around 180-185 mph. If I can keep air out from under the car, the front end won't lift and it should be able to reach the speed I'm hoping for.
The short spoiler is for the road course. It's primary function is to help keep air out from under the car and provide a place to mount the brake cooling ducts. And don't worry, it won't be getting the teeth treatment!

65bomber Nov 29th, 10, 8:13 PM Herb, I have pictures up of my build. Click on the link under my name. There is also a thread here the PT board.
Bad66Chevelle454 Dec 1st, 10, 7:27 PM Well...regardless if it works, it sure does look cool!
It really would be pretty neat to do a back-to-back test to see if it makes any difference. I would think that it HAS to make some sorta difference. All race cars have something similar, and they know their stuff.
BTW....160+MPH is pretty freaking fast :D
Mondo454 Dec 2nd, 10, 10:45 AM I thought I'd share... the Chevelle got a little ink in the new CHP! :D

Yelcamino Dec 5th, 10, 5:12 PM I took the RR spoiler to the powder coat shop on Monday and it's on the car with some color. The vertical portion I tried to match up to the gunmetal on the other parts and the splitter is matte black. You may notice the splitter is smaller than when I first got it. The problem was I kept kicking/tripping over it in my garage because it stuck out so far on the ends, so I ended up trimming it down some.

If your goal is to darken the car's overall look, then yes the gun metal will look good. I'm not sure but I may end up having the bumpers done in the gun metal... but of course that could lead me down a long road of having all the trim, etc done!

Thanks but there's always room for improvement if my check book allows it!
The back space is the same as the other wheels, 5.2" for the front and 5.5" for the rear.
