I'm due to pick up my engine from the machine shop soon (It's been there since before Christmas) I initially was going to have them rebuild it, but decided to just do it myself now. Just going to involve me buying a few more tools

I was just wondering what I might expect to pay. I gave a $600 deposit (only because I was planning on them doing the rebuild)

It's a 402 block w/049 heads. I had the block, heads and crank cleaned and checked for cracks. New cam bearings and brass freeze plugs were installed.

Block was bored .030 over and a three angle valve job done on the heads. I think five of the valve guides needed replaced. There are no new parts involved (I supplied the new valves, springs, locks, retainers and umbrella seals) I also dropped of my new KB pistons (he wanted to weigh them). He said I could get by without balancing, since this will only be a street driver

Just wondering if I will still owe or should I expect a refund?

Did U have anything done to the crank or rods? Press pistons? Heads resurfaced? Block decked?

Nothing done to crank or rods. The heads were resurfaced, but block was not decked. The new pistons were pressed into old rods.

I knew I'd forget something :clonk:

This is kinda like http://www.krcg.com/uploadedImages/Shared/Shows/Price_Is_Right_Logo.jpg

:beers:

I'm gonna guess $800 Bob :p

Seriously, from reigon to reigon and shop to shop it seems prices and procedures vary quite a bit. A minimum of $375 in the block, $300 in the heads, $75 to press the pistons and some change for cam bearings, guides, tax and etc.

Just my somewhat educated and completely questionable guess l:)

Ok, thanks. I was thinking it might be in that range. Hopefully no higher. Things started out good when I dropped everything off, but it's taking much longer than I expected it to. I'm hoping to get it built and in the car by summer. All I have left to buy are the headers (and try to find all the necessary pulleys and brackets)

Bill, curious.....what pistons are you using for the 402 W/ 049 heads? I went with the small tube summit branded headers for my 402 after talking to alot of people. U need to repaint them but they're decent headers for the price.

Good Luck!

I went with the Keith Black Hypereutectic Pistons (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=UEM%2DKB160030%2D8&FROM=MG), Lunati 60203 cam kit (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=LUN%2D60203LK&FROM=MG), Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap intake and Holley Street Avenger 770.

My new Pypes 2 1/2" exhaust (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=PYE%2DSGA10R&FROM=MG) just arrived a few days ago, so just need to get the headers to match up to them. Was thinking of these Hooker Headers (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=HOK%2D2455%2D1HKR&FROM=MG).

Since I'll be doing my own rebuild now, I'll also need bearings and gaskets set. Haven't decided on which ones yet.

I'm hoping to pick up the engine sometime this week :hurray:

Bill, I'm no expert but U might want to have your machinist check to make sure your deck is flat and clean because I ( think ) you'll have to use a shim type head gasket to get the 8.5:1 cr advertised for those pistons.

Around here I'd guess that $600 deposit would cover about half the total bill.

Agreed: to take a 400 s.b. block to a place I trusted locally for a nothing fancy basic performance prep was going to be about his deposit amount.

On another note, will his cam and carb choice match his compression if an auto?
