Here's the deal:

If I wanted to use an under the manifold nitrous injection system on a 396, and planned on a 250hp hit, what kind of reccomendations do you have for the following, considering that my end goal is a streetable combo that can put me in the 13's when I go to the strip:

Heads:
Want to keep the stock heads, but what about valve sizs. Don't remember the casting nbr, but I have 1968 98cc heads.

Cam:
I see Comp has got some special Nitrous Cams out, but would I be better off with an Extreme Energy cam instead, considering that I'm not using the nitrous all the time?

Bottom End:
Motor's got a cast crank, 2 bolt mains. I'm planning on forged pistons, but is the bottom strong enough as it is?

Carb:
Can I keep the Qjet, in order to maintain the stock sleeper image?

Thanks.

You'll probably go 13's w/o nitrous, won't you?

I'm not a fan of the under the manifold nitrous systems. It's hot in there, and how on earth do you change the nitrous and fuel jets w/o taking the intake off????! If you run a plate system, and one of those flat heat shields over the plate, and hide the solenoids underneath at the back, nobody will notice.

About the cam - you will be on the nitrous 0.01% of the time. (seconds a week) I wouldn't run a nitrous specific grind. Any high-velocity cam will be fine (with the .050" duration of your choice). Have it ground on a 112 centerline to keep the pressure in the cylinders.

Stock bottom end with ARP bolts will handle up to 200hp of spray.

You can run whatever carb you want. Nitrous doesn't care much about heads - it's pressurized and doesn't need much help filling the cylinders.

Have fun blorenz1,

Ryan

Forged pistons and you will be fine.

13s w/ 250hp of NOS is not that fast man. Try it w/o the NOS. The whole under the intake thing is expensive. Why don't you tell us a little more about you car and motor. Then we can all look into getting you into the 13s w/o the NOS.

Ya, THEN hammer it with nitrous! (I'm a bad influence - I just bought a 800hp dual stage system yesterday...) http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Thanks for the advice so far guys.

To answer your questions, my car is an elky with a 4spd and 3.90 gears. I have to rebuild the motor this spring.

I wanted the under the intake setup because I think that the heat shields don't really fool anybody who knows, and besides they are ugly.

As far as price, I think that a manifold setup runs about 150 more than a plate kit, plus extras.

I figure that I don't really want to build too aggressive a motor. If I build a mild (350-400 hp) version, I'll be able to live with it on the cruises, and hammar the nitrous when I want to go really fast.

Your thoughts and comments are appreciated. Keep 'em coming!

Hey 505, did you say you bought an 800 HP nitrous kit?? May I ask what that would be sitting on top of? I can't imagine being under full throttle and then switching on another instantaneous 800HP.
I like that blue color of you car by the way.

I recently read in Car Craft from a readers letter. (if it doesn't run 10's or 11's its not ready for nitrous) That statment is sooo! true. With cam, carb, intake, exhaust and decent set of tires should easily put you in the low 13's high 12's. I am assuming since you want to go 13's it now runs 14's 15's?
If you have a solid motor to start with modifie what you have. Do a leakdown test to see its true condition if you don't know a history on the motor. If you are set on the sleeper image run a performer rpm with a quadrajet, a good cam from the manufacture of your chiose in the rpm range of the intake, good set of headers into 3" X pipe with 2.5" outlet with 2.5 turbo muffers to keep the sleeper sound. Bolt on a set of stickies and say hello 12's http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

blorenz,

Why is it SO important to hide the nitrous system? Are you racing for money or something? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Believe me, you don't want an under the intake system. The real advantage to foggers is that you can run adjust the mixture to each cylinder. And you can't change the jets on that system w/o removing the intake - what a PITA. Even if they can't see the nitrous system, they will see your supply line, extra regulator, and have you seen a car with a fogger go down the track? It's bloody obvious when the car takes off, and then takes off again a few feet later. You can also really HEAR when the power comes in. My car had full exhaust, and when I ran against open headered cars, I couldn't hear myself think - but when I hit the button, it got LOUD!

Epistuff,

Yes, I bought a 800hp system. It would be suicide to run the big jets in that unit. It's 100-300 stage 1, 200-500 stage 2.

I will probably run about 100hp on a WOT switch, and 200-300 manually in second or third gear if traction permits. THis is on my 505, which we built up for the nitrous abuse. (custom pistons with thicker crown, solid domes etc) I should be around 650 w/o the nitrous.

There is a buildup similar in a magazine article I could email you - 468BBC, 2 bolt block (with cap girdle), GM crank, Eagle Rods, SRP pistons, Dart 308cc heads. Anyways, it made 930 lb-ft and 1254 hp. My buildup is stronger, and I'm running less nitrous, so it should live. (for a while)

Later,

Ryan

You could always run a Plate system and hide the solenoid's, they don't have to be right there next to the carb, they could be anywhere. I know guy's who've put them in some hard to find places http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif Then all you'll have is two extra Braided lines running to the carb, course you could cover them in black Split loom or a couple of lengths 3/8 rubber hose for even more camouflage and run them in from the back if ya wanted too http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif With 3:90 gears and a four speed that car would be hard pressed not to run in the 13's even with a mild small block. With a decent rebuild and some traction you should be seeing high 12's on motor no prob. Good luck.

GN_Geoff,

I'll email you the article. Do you have a high speed connection? I will scan it in "high-res" if you do.

I just got my nitrous system in the mail yesterday - MAN! It looks insano! 8 spray bars, 4 huge solenoids, bags full o' jets. And one big a$$ bottle. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif Now, just need the purge, a couple more bottles, and a big cylinder for my garage so I can fill my own.
