finally found a tool that would get to my distrib clamp bolt.... i went to sears and bought a 1/4 " 6 point drive 9/16 socket with integral universal joint...
the 3/8 drive one i already had was too big..
still darn tight but i got it...what the heck do the rest of you guys use for hei distributors???

pings at 42* advance ..no ping at 40 so i left it there

initial = 10*
full mechanical = 30*
total= 40*

my umderstanding is that i want it as advanced as possible so she doesnt ping or hard start after heat soak...is that correct???

does this timing setting of 40* without ping tell me anything about the CR???

does this mean its likely thats it's less than 9:1???

Rich, small base is so easy, std 9/16! But I've seen 9/16 wrenches heated and bent into a dog leg to do it ( ala 3/8 brake bleeder ).

What kind of gas gives you no ping? It's impossible to accurately infer a CR but is that with 93 octane?

Your timing is set good, huh? Sounds like it.

Your distrib has more mechanical than mine ( 9.5 in the distrib for 19 total) but that has no bearing, just interesting. I should really double check mine with a light to see the full reading at 3500 again.

Rich I have to check the total, but initial is 12-14 depending on gas and total SHOULD be 34-36. I said 9.5 because that's what the fella said is in the distributor 9.5 X 2 at the crank is 19.

back on topic, http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif, sears/craftsman sells a big bent wrench just for distributors.. i bought one one time and its been very helpful.. no more burnt hands trying to loosen the bolt with a regular wrench... im just surprised no-one has mentioned it

I've seen distributor wrenches at almost every auto parts store and lots of tool stores. Basically the same as a bent box end wrench - sort of a "Z" with right angles.
Mine is two pieces so can be used by itself, or with a ratchet (two L's put together )
