Tomorrow I start putting my sb 408 together. Machine work and balancing done.

The file fit of the rings is my chore for tomorrow and making sure the rods clear the block. I'm using Eagle H-beams 5.7 so I hope it is not an issue.

UD Harold is grinding the cam and hope it is here next week. It is being done on a small base circle so it should be good to go when it gets here. I have done stock re-ring and new bearing jobs before.

I however; face the rings and spiral locks and anything else I run into.

I'm using main studs and they all ready seem to be very tight with the caps. Will they slide down as they should? Wasn't an issue on my BB. They were not line honed with them in but it was not line honed anyway.

The garage is clean. Not perfect but clean.

Since I'm using a roller cam I need to install the flat roller bearing behind the timing gear but need the cam for that.

What else besides going slow and being very clean and double and triple checking all of my work?

Tips? Like, don't spit into the wind. graemlins/clonk.gif

Be really careful when doing the file fitting. Use a SHARP, fairly fine tooth file and always file from the outer edge towear the inner edge.
Check your work often cause you can't put metal back on.
Also, be sure to get the ends square. You'll be surprised how easy it is to get the gap tapered either inside to out or from top to bottom.
If you need to bias metal removal, put a dab of magic marker on the end and then you can tell where you're filing.
Work slowly, check often, be sure the rings are SQUARE in the bore when measuring (I use a small, stiff machinists t-square). Deburr the rings when finished with a fine stone.

Have fun! graemlins/beers.gif

after I file the rings I hold it up and close the gap together...you can tell if its square that way...the second ring will grind easier than the compression ring..and at a hundred bucks a set....take your time

YES!!!!

CLEAN YOUR CRANK with pipecleaners or a small wire brush b/c sh-t like steel shot or glass beads and grinding dust does get into oil passages!!!! Use plenty of BrakeClean, too!! Blowing out the holes...

Do the same thing with your block, but use a warm bucket of water and dishwashing liquid AND an air hose to blow the oil passages out after rodding them out too!!

Just have a clean rag handy soaked in ATF or some other light oil b/c your cylinder bores will FLASH rust right before your eye's as they dry off!! Just wipe them down till clean and go on!!!

Scrub the cylinder walls with hot soapy water. Scrub them until a WD40 soaked paper towel stays clean when wiped on the walls. The hoaning dust imbedded in the walls will take out a set of rings in short order.
