: Radio Antenna...Front / Rear ?
Greg Mar 21st, 08, 4:30 PM I got a '68 last year.
I've looked at lots of pictures of 68's and I've noticed that the radio antenna is located on the front fender on most of them.
However, I've also seen some pictures of 68's with the antenna on the rear fender.
What is the significance of that? Why is the antenna in the rear on some 68's?
Thanks,
-Greg
Don_Lightfoot Mar 21st, 08, 4:45 PM Greg, the rear antenna location was just another option. For example, the RPO's probably said something like this:
- AM puchbutton radio.
- AM pushbutton radio with rear antenna.
Hope this helps.
VinceS427bb Mar 21st, 08, 6:27 PM it was an option
mine has the rear antenea
jonh1373 Mar 21st, 08, 8:58 PM Would that be the same for 69?
FlameOut Mar 21st, 08, 10:00 PM I posted this same question a while back concerning the 67's antenna placement. The responses I got were it was placed in the rear if it had the AM/FM and on the front fender if it was just FM (or vice/versa). No idea if the 68's were like that, or for that matter, the 67's :)

Yes. My car has the factory rear antenna. It's all still there except for the mast. The cable runs on the passenger side, under the carpet.
jonh1373 Mar 21st, 08, 10:20 PM Jimmy,
Do you have an am or am/fm with the rear antenna??
Jimmy P Mar 21st, 08, 10:25 PM It came with an AM only.
Wheelhop Mar 21st, 08, 10:27 PM That's correct, at least for 69's if you got the rear antennae, you got an am radio
Pate Mar 21st, 08, 10:42 PM My 68 also had AM only with a rear antenna.
Ark68SS Mar 21st, 08, 10:47 PM 1968 AM radio=front antenna std, rear antenna optional
1968 AM/FM radio=front antenna only

An AM/FM radio required a fixed length antenna, (non-telescoping), and was only available in 68 as a front fender mounted unit. The AM radio, therefore, was the only one that could have the rear mounted antenna in 1968. I do belive 69 to be the same.

jonathanch Mar 22nd, 08, 9:51 AM I thought it had to do with power and non power antenna. Power was mounted in the trunk because there was no room for the motor under the front fender.
1968Chevelle300Deluxe Mar 22nd, 08, 9:59 AM the rear mounted antenna was only available with the Am radio you could not and i repeat could not order it with the AM/FM radio

Power antennas weren't available in '68 Chevelles.
