I don't know anyone who has tried that particular setup, but in theory it will help. My cousin built his own setup identical to that out of schedule 40 PVC. When it was all said and done, using the K&N cone filter, he had less than $70 in the whole setup. He said that the throttle response was better and his fuel mileage was slightly improved. This was on a 03' Z-71 with the vortec 5.3L engine. He has since sold that truck and bough an 04' duramax/allison. He is in the process of building one for his new truck. I may give this a try as well. Just another option that might prove to be a fun project and save a few $$$.

I have this one (http://www.airaidsales.com/www/product1.aspx?SID=1&Product_ID=6&Category_ID=6) on my 94 Silverado.
That's all that was ever on it since I had it, so no performance comparison.

Yeah, I have it on my '97. I'm probably going to pull, and sell it here soon. About the only thing I got was a louder noise accelerating.

I guarantee no improvement without a chip ... with a performance program, you might find some. My computer is bone stock.

Biggest problem I have is keeping it clean. The one that is open to the engine bay just has too much dirt moving around in there, and I can't keep it clean.

If you want more performance ... the program change is the only thing that will get that! Otherwise, all other "performance" upgrades you do ... will need a new performance program to realize, and will usually result in a loss until the program is changed.

I was younger then, and don't have the funds to do the "right" performance upgrades now. I seriously doubt your air filter is hindering any performance, especially in a lower-rpm truck.

Two upgrades you might consider are a programming module and a good set of headers. Past that, you're looking a cam change to get much more. Don't be like me (and lots of others) and pay much merit to TV and Magazine ads.

you need to have one with a good heat sheild because if its sucking hot air in , the increase in flow will be negated by the temp increase of the air. I have a weapon-r dragon filter on my truck with a homemade heat sheild/cold air box and there was a good improvement in power, also just by installing this filter I saw a 1-2 psi rise in my max boost(supercharged v6) so I know its outflowing the factory set up quite a bit
in the second pic you can see I used lexan to cover the top so you can still see the filter
