: 66 fuse block repair
Beav Jr Mar 21st, 08, 3:28 PM Hey everyone,
does anyone have any ideas on fixing the terminals in a 66 chevelle fuse block. the wiring harness that I have is in pretty good shape but one set of terminals in the fuse block is rusted and crumbling. The others are rusty but I think I can clean them up. Is there some place that sells just the terminal clips that hold the fuses.
Thanks in advance for any help!!

offers a fuse box repair kit, but I think it'll have to be special ordered.

lrisner Mar 21st, 08, 7:56 PM Just buy a new fuse box, about $75. The plastic in the old one is no doubt brittle any way.
I am in that process now with my 66.
As noted in some of my other posts, I had a bunch of wiring issues, the wipers did not work, there was a wire to the fuse box with all of the insulation melted, etc.
The fuse box and connectors were intact, but the fuse clips were rusty.
I got a small ball end carbide cutter for my Dremel, and was able to clean the contact portion of the actual fuse holders. So far, in testing with the battery, it seems to have worked. How long before they rust again, I don't know.
I was able to push the fuse clip that the melted wire connected to, out of the fuse box. I used a piece of that stiff, flat stainless steel strip that comes in windshield wiper blades to slip down in the connector to depress the little prongs that hold the clip in place. That trick also works for removing the wire teminals from the bulkhead connectors themselves, with a u shaped piece....
However, in trying to spread the factory crimp on the wire, I broke the connector portion off the clip.
My temporary country boy fix, was to clean the flat bottom of the fuse clip on a wire wheel, then drill it for a 6-32 screw, and attach the new wire with a small ring terminal.
Fortunately there is room in the box to do this.
Its back in there and working.
If the clip itself was rusted, this may not have worked.
All that said, yes, I plan to replace the dash harness in this car at some not to future point, but right now, I need to just learn what I have, how it works, and get it running for a while.
So far, so good....
And thanks to those who posted the repair parts info!

Ditto, If you screw around with something like that it can only turn bad.....Can yoy say Fire?
rkd Mar 23rd, 08, 10:26 PM It appears the previous owner already had the fire, or at least a major meltdown, but it's worth the time to tinker with each circuit with the existing wiring to assess how it all works, what needs changing, etc.
I agree with the idea of a whole new harness, and plan on it, but it's a money, time and priorites thing right now. Everything on the car seems to need attention, and I want to get it running, and set the engine, trans, brakes, etc, up first, then we will get to seriously cleaning up the wiring.
Not terribly efficient but it will get me there. It does bug me to still be in the diagnosis and testing stage after having the car for a year, but I just have not had time to fool with it until recently.
Beav Jr Apr 5th, 08, 10:54 AM HA, sweet!! My dad gave me a 67 SS dash a long time ago with the factory temp, oil, amp gauges in it. Well I hadn't looked at it for a while but luckily I did the other day because it had the whole wiring harness with a really nice fuse block and everything. So I took the gauge cluster and harness out and put it in my 66 dash so I didn't have the tach hole up top like the 67's. THIS SITE IS AWESOME, I really appreciate all the help and tips from everyone! If anyone wants to see some pics let me know I can send them to you ( thebeavman@iowatelecom.net ), i haven't figured out how to post pic on the threads yet.
Thanks again,
Beav
