Okay... Well here is the story... Someone, not naming any names here, but she let her brother borrow the Bronco for a week to get back and forth. He is a porter at a Chevy Dealership. Well its been about two weeks and he comes by the house with a Water Pump in his hand.

He says that the Bronco was overheated and it needs a new water pump. Now I know for a fact that there is a very small coolant leak from the gasket to the water pump. It was so slow that we would just add water and in a month add somemore. Anyhow... He has the Bronco Parked accross town torn apart and says he want money for the pump, gasket, etc... Yeah, it's less than $50.00 for the whole shooting match, but it is the principal here.

He is saying that the water is leaking out just as fast as he puts it in and the water pump is to blame.. I'm gonna call BS, but before I do.. I wanted to confirm with you.

I'm pretty certain for a water pump to leak that bad, the from bearing and sell would pretty much have to be gone... Right? I know there is a drain hole if the seal is going bad, some will come from there, but not purge the system instantly. I also assume if the gasket was bad, that a bunch of coolant could leak from there.

BTW, there is less than 70,000 miles on the pump. So my question is, if the shaft doesn't shimmy and spins like it should, chances are the water pump isn't the problem, right?

You're doing him a favor by letting him use your car and now he doesn't want to kick in the $50.00 to repair a minor problem? wow........

I think I would go get my car back, put a new gasket on with the old pump and never do that guy a favor again.

I had to do the pump on both of my Broncos I owned. They leaked out the drain hole, but never even got close to the the amount your are describing. I would pay him the $50.00 for parts and "never forget" this incident. He will need your help one day and pay back is a bitch....

My 82 351W Bronco went 60k miles over 6 years, including towing cars and boats from SC to MS and FL, and never needed a water pump. It was well over 100k and abused when I bought it. I had no clue what kind was on it, but it worked.

My 79 Capri, 5.0 loses water continuously, and has done it for 26 years, 270k miles, 3 engines, and about 10 water pumps. Go figure. Most have just developed visible leaks at the shaft to the point where it was obvious the seal was leaking. Usually you have a few days to fix it.

Changing it can be a pain, as you may know, since you have to get the plate to seal to the pump, then the pump to the block. RTV works fine. I have reinstalled the same pump a couple times to get it sealed. But I occasionally get in bfh mode when I shouldn't.

I would be annoyed that he did not call about it first, and drive it back for you to look at. You can always leave the cap loose so they do not build up pressure in the system, to limp them home.

Should have been an easy situation to avoid.
