Going to upgrade my 12 bolt rear with 33 splines axles 33 splines spider gears and f##d style ends. I know that I need to open the holes in the posi for bigger axles but how much? Anyone here done this operation? As far as I found out the 33 splines posi uses the same case as 30 splines just with bigger holes to accept the bigger axles.
Thanks!

i do it all the time. simple operation if you have a big enough lathe. make just the axle hole .020 bigger than axle at the smooth part of the splined end. tom

No kidding a big lathe:eek:
Just thinking about it, what are you chucking on the OD of the gear mount or some other place? It would seem you need a true surface ID or OD to chuck on and then some decent tooling, carbide comes to mind.

maybe if one did not have the lathe, a rat tailed file could work.

Ya Thinkl:). I would like to see someone with a rat tail file hacking on the axle hole, I like the lathe idea much better and I do have access to a kick ass Monarh lathe, 25 HP with a variable speed contoller. I used it to cut down couter weights on 455 Pontiac cranks and hog out a 400 SB crank to fit a 350 block.
Once upon a time I worked as a crank grinder.:beers:

tlowe one more question. As I understand and been told from a lot of differnt rearend reubilders the 33 splines axles would be an increase in strenght. But one guy told me that it would actually make the rear weaker since the increased hole in the posi would snap the journal of if my car hooks? True or faulse? Never heard of that before and manufactures of rearend parts opens eaton carriers all the time and the don´t seems to have any problems? at least I never heard of anyone.
Thanks!

it is true that metal is removed from the inside radius , so therefor it will be weaker than a stock case. i have yet to see either type (30/33) fail in that area. most failures i see are from a bent/ broke cross shaft or spider gear.
that is another reason to only open the hole to the bare minimum to clear the 33 spline axle.
