I decoded my cowl tag and door vin tag and not sure what to make of it. 017
STYLE 5637 KC 2062 017=Jan/7
772= Med red Starette Cloth
TRIM 772 938 PAINT 938= Desert Beige
ACC W 2MS 5V KC= Kansas City Missouri

45537 K 108205

5637=2-door sports coupe, 5 passenger V-8
4= 1964
5537= 6-cyl.
The cowl tag states V-8 and the Door vin states 6-cyl. Should'nt it read 5637 like the cowl Tag. Or would the 5537/6-cyl be an option on the malibu. Should'nt they match? Maybe a mistake. Also not sure what the 2062 means? Thanks for the help on this matter. Joel

While appearing similar the style code (5537) in the VIN and on the cowl tag (5637) serve two different purposes. The VIN tag is the legal identifier of the vehicle while the body tag was attached by Fisher Body to document the body configurations and provide info on servicing of the body. You cannot use the cowl tag to determine the base engine. Fisher body did not care about the engine when it coded the body tag, its just a style code to them and the 6 or V8 made no difference in how the body was built. You will find manyy 6 cyl. cars with style codes on the body that appear to match a V8 but the engine designation was not followed by Fisher Body. Chevy on the other hand had to code the base engine in the VIN due to various laws on the books.

The VIN rules on base engine being a 6 or 8, not the trim tag.

Mike, your the man. I was a little worried. That put's my mind at rest. I'm in the process of getting a title for the car. The car was sold with a bill of sale from the original owner.There state does't have titles for cars that are older than 12yrs. My state said it was'nt a problem to have a bill of sale. I just wanted all my ducks in a line when submitting the info to the BMV. You provided me with an answer if the question was asked. Thanks again for all your help Mike. Joel
