The two tanks in the basement are getting empty as the gauge is down to 1/8. My wife checked around and the cheapest heating oil we can find delivered here is $3.56 a gallon. Last time we filled up was September and we paid $2.20 dang it. I'm wondering if heating oil is the same as kerosene? Haven't priced kero but was thinking about filling up the 5 gallon jug a few times on the way home from work and dumping it in just to make it until the price comes down....or should I say IF it comes down. Minimum delivery from the oil company is $150......heck, that only gets me like 43 gallons!! Isn't kerosene and heating oil the same thing?

Thanks!

Don't do it, kerosene is more like gas than diesel.

You can use kerosene. It will mix with oil in tank and be ok or use deisel.

Most people use kerosene if their tanks are out side . It doesnt freeze. But yes it's ok to use.

i am in the same boat, but its for my garage, and its getting warm, so i can get by with less now-kerosene is more expensive than fuel oil, but i just get a few gallons and add it to get by

I am getting a delivery today @3.69 a gallon. I have two 275 gallon tanks and I can burn through all 550 gallons in 2 1/2 months !! thats about $700 a month right now to heat the house at 68 degrees. Winter sucks !!!

Ouch!! We burn about 750 gallons total a year and have no supplementary heat but our winters are a little warmer and we installed a pretty efficient low mass boiler about 5 years ago which helps. Thanks for the comments on the kerosene and heating oil. I just want to shop around a little. If I can save a few bucks here and there that's great! At this point it might even be wiser to buy some electric heaters to supplement since electric heat is now cheaper than oil. That is until electricity goes up! Guess we're all feeling it! I think the Amish here in Pa. are on to something! But then they never do get the feeling of being thrown back in the seat of a Chevelle either!!

Snooped around and found that I can buy heating oil at a local gas station right out of a gas pump like you do gasoline and it's $3.39 a gallon. Good news! I can save a few bucks and hopefully get by until heating oil comes down. If that ever happens this summer!!
