I had horrible gas fumes...drove my wife nuts. After replacing what I assumed was a leaking tank, I found out it was the sending unit. (A $140 mistake) It had cracked at the outlet tube. A radiator shop fixed it up for next to nothing.

Good luck.

Scott,
Unless you have a leak, the fumes shouldn't be that bad. Old cars have lots of odors compared to newer ones but very strong gas fumes are not common. My tank has a vent...since fixing the leak I have not had a problem with fumes. My wife is very sensative to the smell so I would know if there was another source. The minor vapors coming out of the tank vent or from the carb should not create much smell. Trace the fuel system from tank to carb looking for leaks. If you have rubber hoses connecting the tank to the hard fuel line or pump check those...they don't seem to last very long. With the 502 I'm assuming you have an electric pump and regulator. Check around all those fittings. They should not be damp. Be careful what ever you do - a fire will ruin your day.

I have 1/2 inch braided fuel line......Yes goes from the tank to the fuel filter then to the pump all the way up to the regulater....There is no moist or wet spots any place.....The smell isnt terrible But if I dont leave the fan on it will stink the down stairs(in the house ) up a little bit......

The tank is new ...However it may be coming from the top of the tank (sending unit).....It smells worse in the back for sure.....I think I'm gonna drain the tank and see if that helps .....

Thanks for the replies any other ideas would be helpful..... graemlins/thumbsup.gif

The only time I had a gas smell in my garage was when I had a small gas leak on the Holley 650DP. Fixed the leak, no more gas smell.

funny you brought this up. I have the same problem after driving my car, but usually goes away after a couple days. Couple weeks ago I took it for a spin. A week went by and gas was still really bad, just a few days ago I discovered my tank is dripping, and looks like its my sending unit as well.

Tank might be venting enough to make it smell. Good luck though. I get nagged about it and you can get a nice high watching tv in the basement. I feel your pain ;)

the gas smell in mine is confined to the inside of the car. pretty bad after it sets a few days. i have looked everywhere for a leak and none to be found. my guess is its just the Jazz fuel cell in the trunk. they are made of plastic and my guess is the vapors just vent through the sides of the tank. ive also noticed the plastic cells distorting after a short period of time. makes me think the plastic is really not 100% condusive to having fuel in them, thus my oppinions on the vapors venting through the sides.Dave

I have this smell too. Ever since this spring when I put the new tank in with the old sending unit. I will be draining my tank in a week or so and pulling it down to check out the sending unit..Pain the ARS!
