My buddy bought one of the 290 HP crate motors from GM for about $1500. I have two questions:

1) It has two dipstick holes, one on each side. What do you do with the side not used?
(Came with a cardboard plug)

2) With the motor came (2) 3/8" roll pins about 1/2" long. What are they for?
( no instructions included)

I bought a 260 hp crate and it came with the plug. I used it to plug the pass side hole on my block

This one has a cardboard plug on each side only.

The pins cam in a little plastic baggy.

The block with two dipstick holes that I had, had the plug to put in the unused hole.

You would think that the plug would come with the engine but you should be able to get a plug from your Chevy parts dept.

I had the same motor a few years back and didn't notice the cardboard plug in the pass side until after the engine was in a started (what a mess) We jammed a wood dowell into the hole and it never leaked.

The plug did come in the little baggie with the crank key, and a few other metal dowels... just once it was in the car it was too hard to try and get it into its hole.

You can plug the unused dipstick hole with a blob of Permatex RTV. I have no idea what the roll pins would be used for.

They are dowel pins. Solid material and are used to plug the unused hole.
