How high above the number on the side of the tire can you go on an 1/8 mile drag only car running around 95 mph?

Mine say 44psi on the side,,,run 1000ft or 1/4 mile with 50psi in them. 165Rx15's

I just got 2 new 165/15's today and when I got home I noticed they have 35 psi max on them. My old ones had 45 max and I ran them at 50. Is 50 psi I too much for a 35 psi rating?

I don't know...I'd hate to tell you to put 50psi in them and then we read about a front tire blowout at the track. I'd go 40psi, maybe we have a tire salesman around???

I sold Goodyear's for 6 years and Firestone's for 5 before that. If the sidewall states 44 psi is max, then 44 is max. You can do whatever you want but Ford tried that with Explorer a few years ago and it didn't work ou too well. The tire manufacter' has tested the tire sidewall/treadcap and knows what pressure/temp everything will stay together, the engineer's at the office "might" know what they are talking about.

I don't know about going up 15# but 5 shouldn't be a problem. The reason I say this is because 44# is cold pressure. After some miles on the road they will get somewhat higher and still be safe. I'd wager, in fact I am in my car, that 5 over is much less than the pressure rise on the road. Also, on the strip, they are not running very long and the pressure doesn't rise much during that time. Plus they sit and cool for quite a while between rounds. For street driving, run 'um at the factory recommended pressure. Or better yet at the pressure that gives a full footprint. I wore out a set prematurely in the center of the treads on a VW by running them at max pressure.
