: who makes the best HEI module or upgrade kit?
baddbob71 Jul 17th, 04, 11:50 AM I need to set up a distributor for my son's car soon, originally I was planning on a points style distributor with a pertonix ignitor or crane xc-i or unilite because of firewall clearance but then deicided HEI would probably be best for parts availabilty reasons if failure happens away from home. I'll have to make the needed firewall alterations, no big deal. Anyway, who makes the best HEI parts, coil, module, pickup? I've had some bad experiences years ago with Accell products so they won't be an option. Does anyone sell new bushings for the distibutor? Has anyone used MSD's HEI module? I want good spark to 7000rpms. I used a cheapy upgrade kit from Northern Engine awhile back on a daily driver that worked alright but I'm sure there are better options. Your experiences and recomendations are appreciated.
DEEBOO Jul 17th, 04, 2:02 PM I'm using the MSD HEI Module on my SBC 400 which was turned to 6500 rpm without any problems. During the dyno we started with the shop MSD 85551 and switch to my HEI w/ MSD Module, Accell Coil, Rotor, and Cap.. No problems

baddbob71 Jul 18th, 04, 10:53 PM anyone else using the msd module? And what exactly does it do?
Cable Jul 19th, 04, 4:27 AM I just use a Crane HI-6 ignitions on my HEI equipped cars/trucks.
It bypasses the module altogether, plus I gain a rev limiter, and all the features of an aftermarket ignition.
oscar_a_wiggy Jul 19th, 04, 1:23 PM i redid my distributor over the winter. got a pertronix HEI coil, pertronix module, pertronix cap and rotor and went to napa and got a new connector and capacitor. all this stuff cost about $90. idles real nice, very smooth. don't notice any difference in perfromance, but it idles nice and i did notice the exhuast smell wasn't quite as potent at idle. bought all the pertronix stuff from summit. just my 2 cents.
baddbob71 Jul 20th, 04, 12:08 AM Thanks for the info so far, does anyone know what msd's module does vs. the other ones available? Any more spark duration?
Ike Jul 20th, 04, 12:13 AM My .02...
Accel failed me miserably, until I realized that the humidity here in Oregon was rusting my ground strap for the coil, causing problems which ultimately resulted in the car not starting 'when it was under 35deg' (no kidding).
Since addressing the issue, my most reliable ignition has been Accel SuperCoil, cap, and module. I plated the ground strap...no more problems.
I've heard some newer brand name modules 'run cooler' (heat kills)...anybody know of that for a fact?

novaderrik Jul 20th, 04, 4:49 AM i've had the MSD module in my HEI since 2000, and the recall on my tach has shown 7400 on a few occasions.
Keith Tedford Jul 20th, 04, 8:28 AM We are running the Delco 990 Module in the HEI distributor in our L78 396 and it works well. At the same time, We've had no problems with the points distributor and heavy duty points. Spend a few bucks and get the advance curve set up right by someone who knows what they are doing. It's surprising just how few people really understand the workings of a distributor.
baddbob71 Jul 20th, 04, 10:06 AM Delco 990 module, is that a performance module or just stock GM?
bored&stroked Jul 20th, 04, 10:31 PM I went from a accel HEI to a MSD 6a and blaster 2 and picked up power, RPM, and better starts.
On my daily driver I put a msd coil+module in a stock HEI and its been very reliable.
tpshea Jul 21st, 04, 9:04 PM Well, I don't have the link, but IgnitionMan has soem really cool looking HEI into points distributors conversions that would be perfect. Modern setup in an original looking package.
baddbob71 Jul 22nd, 04, 7:50 AM That sounds like a nice package as long as the parts can be replaced with common available stuff. I bet the module is mounted externally
