: Headers on a 67?
eakkmjl6 Jan 18th, 05, 10:57 AM I own a 67 SS 454 and would like to install headers. Is there a set of headers that can be easliy installed with little obstruction from the steering shaft and or other components and that can bolt up to a stock exhaust??
I have read that some Shorty / Block Hugger style headers can accomplish this? True??
Currently I have stock manifolds installed.
Any help would be appreciated.
SoCalRat Jan 18th, 05, 11:20 AM This has been discussed many times. I have Heddman elites 68198 and have no interference problems on my 67 with 454
eakkmjl6 Jan 18th, 05, 11:22 AM Thank you! I will look into them.
67Super Sport Jan 18th, 05, 12:28 PM I'll tell you what won't fit well, and that is Hooker Competition headers. I had to ding in the tube around the steering shaft and a tube that runs down beside the right side control arm bushing.
I hear Hooker Super Comps with 1.75 primaries fit a lot better, but they are a bit pricey and I also have heard good things about the Hedman's.
67RAT Jan 18th, 05, 7:31 PM 67 super sport,my hooker 2 1/8 primary tube super comps fit right in my 67 ss,get super close the the firewall under the heater box,and very close to the stearing shaft, but dont hit either,BUT,my hookers were bought and installed back in 1990,may be different now,for what reason?,who knows--67rat
67Super Sport Jan 19th, 05, 7:34 AM 67Rat- That's what I was saying, that the super comps seem to fit better from what I hear and have seen on some other cars. The super comps are more purpose built for a year of car, instead of one part number fitting a 10 year span of car as it is for the competition headers.
427L88 Jan 19th, 05, 1:40 PM My 2" Comps fit mint ( a touch of clearancing on #5 tube), however, I would uset he priceier Super comps 1.75" or 1.75" Hedmans. Better header design for a motor that won't see much above 6000. If you zing it up there and want the best pull from 4500-7000, then 2" Comps are the answer.
67RAT Jan 19th, 05, 5:05 PM 67 super sport,sorry misread your post  ---got ya now----67rat
cromedss Jan 21st, 05, 8:37 PM Headers... graemlins/angry.gif Headers..... graemlins/angry.gif oh did I say graemlins/angry.gif I had a hell of a time getting the Hooker Comps 2" primaries on my 65 big block. I was ready to cut them out with a torch and send em' back for a refund.
Chris R Jan 21st, 05, 10:42 PM Im not sure how different the 66 clearances are. But my 66SS has Hooker Super Comps and they fit real nicely.
Chris.
XVULTURE Jan 22nd, 05, 10:28 AM I have heard a lot of horror stories about clearance problems and I have seen some headers that just look squeezed in. If you don't mind paying a few bucks more for a cutom fit, give Dan Lemon a call at Lemons Headers in CA. I did a bunch of research and he has got the sweetest headers around. The fit is incredible and they look trick too. Zero interference problems, you can get to everything, no engine lifting or problems getting to your oil filter, they stay high and tight. Well worth the extra coin.

stacey honn Jan 22nd, 05, 4:37 PM I just bought a set of ceramic coated Hookers part # 2455. 427L88 (Gene) ^ posted above that he had to ding # 5 a bit. I did too. No other fitment probs but spark plug and wratchet won't fit onto # 6. just the socket will. I can tell you that the hedman 1 and 3/4 headers for the 67 is what I've had for the past 4 years and they are a perfect fit. It seems to me that when you go over 1 and 3/4 primary tube size is when you start running into fitment probs unless you pony up more money. Hope this helps. Stacey
Whittaker Jan 22nd, 05, 6:48 PM (I have the Hemans and they were tight but not bad. 1 3/4 inch coated. I would buy them from Jet Hot if I had to do it over. My coating rusting and bubling a bit after 5 or 6 years. Not that many miles though. I tried Hookers and they were not going to fit my car w/o some hammer work and were hangin lower than I liked so I sent them back.
Stacey should post some pics if we ask nicely.
