: Anyone know which frame stands?

I've done a search on this question already but didn't seem to find what I was looking for. I'm having a really hard time getting a grasp on what I need for motor mounts. I am open to using anything. I don't mind drilling holes or buying new stuff. I just need to know what to order or dig for at the junkyard.
The car is a 77 Malibu. Motor is a 454.
This pic is of my current setup (sorry it's a little blurry). It doesn't look right to me. What you're looking at is the frame stand out of a V6 monte carlo with the "tall & skinny" style of poly mount.

I'm wondering if I need this instead: http://members.tccoa.com/jt3/carpics/framestand.jpg This was taken from the classic industries catalog and listed as a small block frame stand for a 1st gen camaro.
I would GREATLY appreciate any advice and I'm sorry if I seem like a noob at this.

I believe a '77 uses a clamshell mount?

OK, the 305 that came out of the car had clamshell mounts holding it in. Does that mean I should order these http://members.tccoa.com/jt3/carpics/clamshellmount.jpgand get new poly inserts for my clamshell mounts? I appreciate the reply because I need all the help I can get.

All I can tell you is that on my '76 Nova, I used a clamshell mount setup for a small block when I installed my 454 and everything fit good. All the holes were in the crossmember already. I just had to move the mount around till the right holes lined up. GM was swapping different engines in these cars so there will be several mounting holes in the crossmember. Each clamshell was bolted in using three of the four holes in it, which I believe is how the factory did it on a small block setup.

There are tons of holes everywhere in the crossmember so I would assume that a variety of frame stand options are available. Right now I feel like the motor sits too high. Here is a pic that might help illustrate. http://members.tccoa.com/jt3/carpics/122_2253%232.jpg
There are probably 3-4 inches of room under the bottom of the oil pan that I would like to get rid of. Plus, I think I just flat out have the wrong parts so I'd like to fix that. If at all possible I'd rather not use the clamshell mounts because drilling out the rivets and replacing the insert is kind of a pain. Any advice on whether or not the other ones will work?

I don't know if it would work or not, but have you tried a earlier model chevelle big block mounts. you could also either have custom ones fab'd or do it yourself.

See if you can borrow some solid mounts the right width to match your stands. Also, you might try Moroso or Mr Gaskets site and see it they list the demensions of there mounts. They are in the paper catalog. My solid mount measured almost exactly the same as the stock rubber ones that came off. And actually fit unlike the rubber parts store replacements I bought.
I just run one solid mount and the rest are rubber.
I was used to the extra vibration in a day or two.

Moroso also makes stands to go with clam shell mounts minus the rubber insert.

By earlier model Chevelle mounts do you mean something that looks like these?

Or do you mean something like this http://members.tccoa.com/jt3/carpics/insert.jpg which is clamped on by something like this http://members.tccoa.com/jt3/carpics/clamshellmount.jpg Thanks for your help so far guys.

the clamshell mounts ive seen all had the "clamshell" mounted to the block and the actual rubber mount bolts to the frame.

you might be able to find a rubber mount that isnt as tall that will fit your current setup. if not you will either have to switch to the clamshell type mounts or the early type mounts. either one involves removing the frame stands you have now, with your car i would lean toward the clamshell type since thats probably what it came with originally, the holes for them are probably already there.

i believe i have a pair of the clamshells, if you want them ill let you have em if you pay the shipping cost.
